Key Duties
* Establish and develop effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders (e.g. internal – university departments and directorates, in particular Academi Gymraeg, external - Welsh medium schools, Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and Cymdeithas Ysgolion Dros Addysg Gymraeg).
* Develop and deliver effective widening participation programmes and projects, with a specific focus on engaging and inspiring students from Welsh medium schools and helping them to gain an understanding of the benefits of higher education and the opportunities available to them.
* Organise and deliver school visits, including regional weeks across Wales.
* Design and deliver a creative and engaging programme of on campus activities.
* Support the development of communication plans and the renewal of materials to ensure they are appropriate for the target groups.
* Maintain comprehensive knowledge of, and provide to potential applicants, accurate information concerning aspects of student life at Cardiff University, including Welsh language opportunities.
* Collaborate with others in order to make recommendations for developments of established processes and procedures. This includes consultation with key stakeholders to make improvements to projects.
* Create reports for the WP Strategy Delivery Board, the Welsh Language Executive Group, the Schools Liaison Team, and the Strategic Equality Plan Board.
* Supervise the day-to-day operation of the casual staff (students) who support projects, including the allocation of work tasks, production of work schedules, monitoring of holiday cover/working arrangements, providing training and support to staff members and students where necessary
* Create specific working groups from colleagues across the Universities to achieve project objectives
* Develop and deliver training within school engagement – for example, training student ambassadors so they can deliver talks to local schools.
* Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the project.
* Contribute to other Cardiff University Widening Participation projects as required.
* Support key events, including, but not limited to Undergraduate Open Days, Clearing, WP events, and Welsh festivals such as Eisteddfoddau and Tafwyl.
* Please note that travelling to schools is a requirement of this job and as such applicants must have a full and valid UK driving licence. It is not a requirement that applicants have their own vehicle.
* A flexible approach to working is essential, as the job will require out-of-hours and overnight working to accommodate school visits and to support institutional open days/events.

The role is based at Sbarc, Maindy Road, Cardiff. The team work in the office on Monday and Tuesday at a minimum and have the option to work from home for the remainder of the week. There are regular occasions when the team are required to be on campus Wednesday – Friday (e.g. to support event delivery, to attend meetings or training) so a flexible approach is required on the part of the post-holder.
The role will include evening, weekend and overnight working (for residential Summer Schools). It should be noted that it will not ordinarily be possible to take annual leave during Summer Schools (in late June / early July), on undergraduate and postgraduate open days and during Clearing week in mid-August.
About the Department
The Communications and Marketing Department is responsible for the University's reputation and branding as well as UK/International student recruitment operations. It covers six areas: communications and public affairs, marketing, UK student recruitment and outreach, digital communications, international and admissions.
Communications plays an important part in building and maintaining the reputation of the University through effective communication to the public and to external and internal stakeholders. It communicates the achievements and aspirations of the University through a variety of media and includes a film unit. The team represents the University on a corporate level. Public affairs lead on stakeholder relationships locally, nationally and internationally.
Digital Communications is responsible for the design, development and content of the external website and the intranet.
Marketing is responsible for developing a strong brand identity for the University at the corporate level, with an emphasis on better visual branding and market research.
UK Student recruitment and Outreach plays an important role in attracting the University's undergraduate and postgraduate students from throughout the UK; in addition to managing the University's widening participation activities.
The International Office drives the University's international recruitment strategy and advises on all areas related to international recruitment and development.
Admissions are responsible for managing thousands of applications each year from both UK and international students, as well as leading on the development and implementation of our admissions policies.
