Health Care Assistant - Newtown Medical Practice
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious and enthusiastic Healthcare Assistant to join Newtown Medical Practice. We are looking for a Healthcare Assistant to join our team and to work full-time alongside our Clinical Team.
As a Health Care Assistant, you will assist the clinical team to deliver safe, high‑quality primary care services to our patients. Ideally the candidate would have some form of Healthcare Assistant experience and have the ability to take blood samples. It would be desirable for you to hold a relevant NVQ level 2/3 qualification. Full training will be given.
The surgery is open from 8am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday. This is a full‑time role (37 hours) and we do require the successful candidate to work 5 days per week.

Newtown Medical Practice is based in the bustling market town of Newtown on the beautiful Shropshire/Powys border. Being near the Marches border we have the advantage of an attractive rural environment with good links to the national motorway network providing access to both rural hills and coast in one direction and access to the larger urban areas of Shrewsbury, Chester and Birmingham within a reasonable drive time in the other direction.
We are a friendly and supportive practice with 5 partners managing 13,500 patients well used in multi-disciplinary working.
Job responsibilities
* Work alongside a clinician in the provision of patient care
* Undertake patient‑centred tasks & record details in patient records, measurement of height & weight
* Urinalysis
* Measurement of blood pressure, temperature & pulse
* Peak flow measurements
* Recording of ECGs
* Venepuncture
* Gather data on relevant patient history & health status (others as appropriate)
* 24 hr B/P
* Diabetic foot assessment
* Assist with the administration & despatch of pathological specimens
* Assist with minor procedures
* Assist with wound care
* Assist with minor injuries as appropriate
* Assist with ordering drugs & other medical supplies
* Assist with the display of health promotion displays & leaflets
* Clearing and restocking rooms when necessary
* Undertake stitch removal
* With suitable qualification administer Influenza and Vitamin B12 injections
* Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well‑being
* Undertake miscellaneous administrative & support tasks associated with clinical activities
* Undertake and assist in audit
* Stock take
* Any other delegated responsibility deemed appropriate to the post
Qualifications
* Minimum of 5 GCSEs to include English and Maths
* NVQ level 2 in Health & Social Care
* Qualified to NVQ Level 3
Experience
* Ability to work as part of a team
* Organisational skills
* Confident around other health professionals
* Knowledge of IT systems, including ability to use word processing skills, spreadsheets, emails and the internet to create simple plans and reports
* Phlebotomy accredited
* Immunisation and vaccination accredited
