This is a chance to help rewrite the fashion industries story — while democratising access to creative work. By volunteering as a Grant Writer / Fundraiser, you will Secure vital funding that allows Re Make to expand training, factories, and community programs. Help regenerate towns left behind by offshoring. Directly enable the creation of fair jobs, new skills, and sustainable production. Play a central role in proving fashion can be ethical, circular, digital, and people-first. The Hidden Cost of Cheap Clothes For decades, textile towns across Britain powered local economies. Generations built livelihoods in mills and garment factories. At their peak, the UK had thousands of factories employing tens of thousands of workers. Then came offshoring. Clothes became cheaper, but the real cost was paid here at home Job loss → Factory numbers collapsed by over 90%, wiping out secure employment in just a few years. Skills wasted → Generations of expertise disappeared. By 2021, fewer than 5% of UK garment workers were under 35. Communities hollowed out → Many areas now face some of the highest in-work poverty rates in the UK, with more than 1 in 4 workers earning below the Real Living Wage. Exploitation returned → Investigations uncovered factories paying as little as £3.50 an hour. This isn't just about global supply chains. It's about what happened in our own backyard — and why we now have a once-in-a-generation chance to put it right.
