About us
The Independent is an online news publisher that was established in 1986 as a national newspaper independent of party political affiliations or proprietorial influence. In 2016, The Independent became a fully digital publisher, moving away from print in pursuit of sustainability, and to safeguard its values and journalism for the future.
The Independent has always thrived through innovation and change. It was the first British newspaper to add a Saturday magazine; the first to give photography the same prestige as a news copy; the first to challenge the Westminster lobby system of closed briefings; the first broadsheet to move to the more compact ‘tabloid’ format; the first to launch a concise quality compact paper; and the first – and only – major newspaper to pull off a successful transformation to fully digital publishing.
Through The Independent, Independent TV, eCommerce, indy100, subscriptions and other ‘reader revenues’, The Independent plans to continue the work of many decades, bringing much-needed independent journalism to over 100 million unique global visitors a month, make its voice ever louder and more insistent the world over.
We have an international editorial team with our main offices in London and New York.

The Role
We are looking for a confident and creative Producer to join The Independent Studio team. Based in London and reporting to the Head of Content, this role will see you developing and delivering standout original programming for The Independent’s growing suite of digital video formats.
This is not an entry-level position — we’re looking for a capable, self-directed producer with proven experience creating high-quality content for digital audiences. You will be comfortable taking projects from pitch to publication, whether that’s a short-form news explainer, a returning social format, or a documentary feature. You’ll be trusted to own your ideas, manage timelines, and work fluidly across editorial, studio and post-production teams.
You’ll also contribute to brainstorms, talent development, and content strategy — working as part of a collaborative team producing bold, insightful and visually rich storytelling across subjects including news, culture, lifestyle, and global affairs.
You are:
* An experienced and self-sufficient video producer with a strong portfolio of digital-first content
* Confident developing treatments, writing scripts, and managing pre-production
* Skilled at directing both talent and crew on set — with strong editorial instincts and visual style
* A strong communicator who can coordinate efficiently with editors, designers, talent, and stakeholders
* Proactive and solutions-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple projects at once and deliver to tight deadlines
* Comfortable working in a fast-paced, newsroom-adjacent environment where editorial priorities can shift quickly
* A creative thinker who draws inspiration from a wide range of visual media, journalism, and pop culture
* Passionate about storytelling that informs, challenges, and resonates with diverse audiences
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the end-to-end production of original video projects for The Independent’s channels
* Write scripts, structure episode breakdowns, and coordinate shoots in-studio and on-location
* Direct on-screen talent and contributors to ensure clear, engaging delivery
* Collaborate closely with editors to shape narrative and visual flow — including providing clear, constructive notes
* Ensure all output meets our editorial standards, brand tone, and platform-specific best practices
* Contribute to team brainstorms and development meetings, supporting the evolution of formats and series
* Liaise with internal stakeholders across editorial, design, and social distribution
* Help surface emerging talent, stories, and opportunities aligned with The Independent’s values and global outlook
Additional Desirable Skills:
* Strong scripting ability — able to turn complex ideas into concise, compelling video
* Talent direction experience — confident working with presenters and contributors of all experience levels
* Shooting skills — able to operate a camera if required, with a strong eye for composition
* Basic editing skills — able to create rough cuts and communicate editorial direction clearly to editors
* Experience with cross-platform delivery — including YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and owned-and-operated sites
