About the role
Balfour Beatty are looking for an Assistant Cabling Design Engineer to join their Power T&D business in Motherwell.
Role Purpose
The position involves carrying out the design of high‑voltage and extra‑high‑voltage power cable systems with detailed design information, initially to allow cost estimating of proposed systems and following receipt of an order to carry out the contract engineering.
What you’ll be doing
Accountabilities
* Assist in the design of cable systems ranging from 11 kV to 400 kV, considering load capacity and network constraints.
* Support the preparation of design drawings and documentation required for cable system installation.
* Contribute to project design activities to help meet client, programme, and quality requirements.
* Assist with cable installation design activities, including pulling tension calculations and thermo‑mechanical force assessments.
* Support electrical design activities such as current rating calculations, earthing designs, and induced voltage calculations.
* Liaise with suppliers to obtain technical data and assist with checking cables, accessories, trench backfill materials, and associated installation components.
* Apply client enquiry specifications and drawings with guidance from senior engineers.
* Communicate with client representatives, estimators, and construction teams as required to support design development.
Maintain accurate design records and ensure compliance with relevant standards and procedures.
Who we’re looking for
* Degree (or working towards a degree) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
* Some knowledge or exposure to HV/EHV power systems (11 kV to 400 kV) and cable systems is desirable.
* Basic understanding of cable system electrical engineering principles.
* Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics.
* Awareness of cable installation techniques and design procedures.
* Willingness to learn, strong attention to detail, and good communication skills.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary design team.
