A Snapshot of Your Day
As a Team Leader in HVDC Control and Protection Engineering, you will guide a team of specialists in designing and delivering comprehensive control and protection solutions for wind farm grid connections and interconnectors. You’ll oversee design validation, manage departmental work packages to meet time and budget targets, and foster a “right first time” culture through mentoring, training, and process optimization. Ensuring resource availability and driving continuous improvement across the engineering department are key aspects of the role.
You’ll work collaboratively with peer Team Leaders to grow the team into a globally integrated delivery function. Reporting to both the UK Head of Control and Protection and the Global Department Head in Germany, your responsibilities include team management (up to 15 engineers), strategic concept development for HVDC systems, and coordination of innovative solutions. You’ll also lead employee development through training and deployment initiatives.
How You’ll Make an Impact
1. Lead and develop a team of HVDC control and protection engineers, managing resource planning, performance, and training across global projects.
2. Define and coordinate control and protection concepts for HVDC systems, collaborating with technical teams on innovative solutions and ensuring technical compliance.
3. Oversee project management tasks including concept clarification, customer engagement, documentation, and simulation support.
4. Support continuous improvement through mentoring, training matrix management, and standardization of engineering processes and tools.
5. Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation, risk management protocols, and company policies, while minimizing rework through NCR system oversight.
6. Contribute as a technical specialist in control engineering design, software development, simulation model validation, and customer training.
What You Bring
7. Degree in electrical power or control engineering, ideally complemented by a relevant MSc or PhD, with experience in the power engineering industry.
8. Strong knowledge of high-voltage applications, power transmission systems, power electronics, and HVDC technology.
9. Proven expertise in control engineering and modelling of HVDC systems in both time and frequency domains.
10. Proficient in power system simulation tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC, MATLAB/Simulink, and EMTP-RV.
11. Excellent communication and negotiation skills for effective customer engagement.
12. Fluent in English (spoken and written); German language skills are an advantage.
