Job Description:

Public Sector Accounting and Financial Reporting Manager

Background: Finance functions in the public sector face increasing demands to balance financial stability with evolving complexity, regulations, and accounting standards. These challenges require capable finance teams to adapt and excel. Recognising these challenges, Grant Thornton is expanding its team to support public sector organisations with accounting, financial reporting, and finance function support. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in developing and growing these services and directly supporting public sector financial challenges.

Why Grant Thornton: Our Public Sector Financial Reporting and Accounting Support (“FRAS”) team provides support to non-audit clients across areas like accounting, financial reporting, and finance support, helping Finance Directors find sustainable solutions to complex issues.

Our UK audit practice comprises over 2,300 professionals across 24 locations, led by Wendy Russell and supported by 50 audit partners. We pride ourselves on our wellbeing, resource, and quality standards, demonstrated by recent positive AQR results. Our teams help businesses and communities achieve their goals through tailored, responsive services.

Our Public Sector Audit team, with over 470 members, works with NHS Trusts, Local Authorities, and other public bodies, expanding our assurance work beyond audit to include thought leadership and insights.

Our size and culture offer extensive career development opportunities, responsibility, and variety in work and clients, from NHS trusts to local government. We support your career growth with development programs and opportunities.

Life Is About More Than Work: We support flexible working options—reduced hours, job sharing, hybrid work—to help you balance work and life. Our culture encourages you to work in a way that suits you and your clients.

Our Inclusive Culture: We value diversity and respect, fostering an environment where everyone can perform at their best and bring their whole selves to work. Our open culture means you’ll interact with leaders interested in your contributions and passions.

The Role: As a manager in our public sector financial reporting and accounting support team, you will:

* Manage delivery of non-audit engagements, ensuring quality standards are met.
* Use problem-solving skills to address complex technical matters, including accounting issues and implementation of new standards.
* Take on team responsibilities, including training and project development.
* Contribute to business development and generate new service ideas.
* Oversee team members in project delivery.
* Support project finances and client onboarding.
* Build strong relationships with clients and team members.
* Continuously seek personal and business growth.

Candidate Criteria: To be successful, you will need:

* Professional Accounting qualification (ACA, ICAS, CA, ACCA, or CIPFA).
* Post-qualification experience in providing professional services to Local Authorities and Health bodies or within public sector finance functions.
* Strong knowledge of IFRS standards and their application in the public sector.
* Excellent public sector financial reporting skills.
* Project management experience.
* Experience in relationship management and business development (beneficial).
* Experience coaching junior colleagues.

Beyond the Job: Your impact extends beyond daily tasks—through secondments, charity work, and supporting entrepreneurs worldwide. We value doing the right thing, driven by our purpose, curiosity, and honesty. We seek individuals eager to contribute, innovate, and uphold our values, making a positive difference for clients, colleagues, and communities.
