Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is offering a fixed-term Resident Non Airway Fellow post in the Wessex Neurological Intensive Care Unit, commencing February 2026. The post is for 6 months with a view to extend to 12 months.
This opportunity is designed for graduates who have completed UK Foundation Training or equivalent. Prior ICU experience is desirable but not essential. The unit supports those aiming to develop skills leading to a CCT or CESR in Intensive Care Medicine or Anaesthesia.
Main duties
Junior Clinical Fellows are involved in the daily management of neurological intensive care patients, attend ward rounds, and share routine work with the medical team. Fellows will develop skills such as central venous line insertion and arterial cannulation, with training provided. There are opportunities to develop skills in lung ultrasound, transthoracic echocardiography, lumbar puncture, CSF sampling, and multimodal monitoring for neurotrauma cases (e.g., intracranial pressure waveform analysis and brain tissue oxygenation monitoring).
Fellows may assist in organ support after demonstrating competence and support senior staff in care involving brain stem death testing and organ donation. Meticulous record keeping and comprehensive clinical handover are required. Mandatory teaching is held weekly, and attendance at relevant multidisciplinary meetings is encouraged. Opportunities to develop teaching and presentation skills, participate in clinical research trials and audits, and take funded study leave are provided. An educational supervisor will be assigned and workplace-based assessments and appraisals will be undertaken.

Qualifications, Training & Experience
Essential criteria
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* GMC registration with a licence to practise
* 2 years working as a doctor since gaining medical degree
* Full completion of uninterrupted UK Foundation Training or equivalent
Desirable criteria
* Postgraduate qualification/ALS/ATLS
* Postgraduate examinations FRCA/MRCP/FFICM/MCEM/EDIC or equivalent
* Previous work in NHS acute specialty
* Previous work in NHS Intensive Care
Aptitudes and skills
Essential criteria
* Understanding of equality and diversity and its effect on patients, visitors and staff
* Foundation Competencies or equivalent with evidence (WBPAs, CREST or equivalent)
* IT skills
Desirable criteria
* Anaesthetic and/or ICU practical skills
