Role Overview

We are looking for a Consultant Cellular Pathologist to join the Cellular Pathology Department at St James's University Hospital, supporting the Gynaecological pathology service and a cutting-edge molecular pathology service across Leeds and the wider region. The successful candidate will be part of an academic partnership with the University of Leeds and will have opportunities to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.


Key Responsibilities

* Analyse and report on histology, cytology and molecular tests (IHC, FISH, genomics) for gynaecological pathology.
* Scan all histology slides and support digital reporting, including the possibility of home working in line with departmental guidelines.
* Participate in and support multidisciplinary team meetings for Oncology, Colposcopy and Hysteroscopy.
* Contribute to teaching and training of medical students, residents and allied health professionals.
* Attend monthly departmental management meetings and participate in audit, governance, appraisal and research activities.
* Assist with photomicrography, macroscopic photography and support the department’s audiovisual personnel.


Key Qualifications

* FRCPath or equivalent specialty qualification, and inclusion on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months after completion of CCT if in training).
* Established skills in gynaecological pathology with demonstrable experience in biopsies, cervical screening and complex cancer surgery specimens.
* Strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
* Experience or interest in molecular pathology, IHC, FISH or genomic testing is desirable.
* Readiness to work full or part time and willingness to job share if requested.


Other Requirements

* Must be on the Specialist Register or will be required to join within 6 months of CCT.
* Applicants must be eligible for a United Kingdom work visa; Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust cannot sponsor non-eligible visa holders.
* Successful candidates will need to deliver a 10-minute presentation on "How technology is changing the role of a histopathologist" during the interview process (interviews scheduled Monday 6 July 2026).
* Applicants may be involved in rotating MDT work across Oncology, Colposcopy and Hysteroscopy.


Working Conditions

The laboratory is equipped with double-headed microscopes, multi-header microscopes and digital reporting with Powerwall. Photomicrography and macroscopic photography facilities are available, with support from departmental audiovisual personnel. Monthly departmental meetings and MDT sessions will provide a collaborative environment.

Note: Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust cannot sponsor applicants who do not meet the Skilled Worker visa eligibility criteria or the salary threshold concessions set out under the visa route.
