Do you want to help us improve human health and understand life on Earth? Make your mark by shaping the future to enable or deliver life-changing science to solve some of humanity's greatest challenges. We are seeking a scientist with strong collaborative skills to join the Bayraktar team at the Sanger Institute, where you will contribute in the generation of large-scale spatial transcriptomic datasets in brain cancer biology and neurodegenerative diseases using cutting-edge single cell and spatial transcriptomics techniques and also in the design and establishment of large functional genomics screening workflows. This position is for a 2 year contract. About Us : The Bayraktar lab uses spatial and single cell transcriptomics to discover the biology of human brain disorders. The team has generated large-scale single cell and spatial multiomic atlases of human brain diseases and other pathologies with deep experience in spatial transcriptomic data generation and analysis. About the Role : In this role, you will coordinate and troubleshoot single-cell and spatial multi-omics workflows, manage human tissue sample logistics, and work closely with wetlab and computational scientists to deliver high-quality data across multiple projects. You will also contribute to the development and optimisation of CRISPR screening pipelines, supporting functional genomics studies using advanced model systems such as spheroids and organoids. This is a dynamic position offering the opportunity to onboard emerging multi-omic technologies, shape high-throughput genomic workflows, and provide training and expertise to colleagues. You will be an integral part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, maintaining partnerships across the Institute and with external collaborators. Relevant publications of the team: De Jong, G. et al. A spatiotemporal cancer cell trajectory underlies glioblastoma heterogeneity. bioRxiv 2025.05.13.653495 (2025). Saraswat, M. et al. Decoding Plasticity Regulators and Transition Trajectories in Glioblastoma with Single-cell Multiomics. bioRxiv 2025.05.13.653733 (2025). Lee, J. T. H. et al. Integrated histopathology, spatial and single cell transcriptomics resolve cellular drivers of early and late alveolar damage in COVID-19. Nat Commun 16, 1979 (2025). Kleshchevnikov, V. et al. Nat Methods 22, 3-5 (2025). About You: This role would be excellent for a skilful wet lab scientist interested in spatial omics, brain cancer and neurodegeneration, with a clear career progression path. Essential Skills : MSc or PhD in relevant wet-lab subject (Molecular biology, Biomedical, Biotechnology or any Interdisciplinary field) or equivalent experience Demonstrable experience in single cell, spatial omics, CRISPR screening and human tissue handling Prior experience or knowledge of histology and tissue processing Experience with managing/responsibility for scientific projects Experience in cancer organoid, cell line modelling and tissue culture Excellent communication skills Proven ability to work effectively within a team Ability to successfully manage and prioritise multiple competing projects Good attention to detail and record keeping for sample and experimental tracking Ability to test, implement and troubleshoot new analysis approaches An ability to lead and inspire others to achieve scientific projects Other information : For further role details, please see role profile. Salary per annum (dependent upon skills and experience): £44,890-£53,331 Application Process : Please apply with your CV and a Cover Letter outlining how you meet the criteria set out above. Closing Date : 28th September 2025 Hybrid Working at Wellcome Sanger: We recognise that there are many benefits to Hybrid Working; including an improved work-life balance, with more focused time, as well as the ability to organise working time so that collaborative opportunities and team discussions are facilitated on campus. The hybrid working arrangement will vary for different roles and teams. The nature of your role and the type of work you do will determine if a hybrid working arrangement is possible.
