Healthcare Support Worker - Cheetham Hill

Cheetham Hill is a welcoming 28‑bedded ward, treating acute and medically ill older adults with the highest standard of quality care. It puts the patient experience first.
Our team is comprised of a Ward Manager, Junior Sisters, Staff Nurses, Nursing Auxiliaries, Ward Clerk, Ward Administrator, Ward Assistant and Hotel Services Staff. As a vital part of this multidisciplinary team you will assist the nursing staff to improve, maintain and deliver high standards of care, promoting health and well‑being of patients through assessment, treatment and rehabilitation.

Main duties of the job
* Undertake direct patient care under the delegation of the Registered Nurse and document care given as required.
* Assist in the reception and admission of patients.
* Follow the individual plan of care for each patient, including bed making, personal hygiene, pressure area and continence management, elimination requirements, rehabilitation with physio/OT, meal intake, feeding, fluid balance, controlled drugs, nutritional assessment, weight, monitoring, equipment use and patient escorting to other departments.
* Assist in the collection of specimens for laboratory investigation.
* Follow training and assist the Registered Nurse in additional duties such as outpatient clinics, routine specimen and urine testing, vital sign recording, blood glucose monitoring, venepuncture and cannulation, basic life support.

Job responsibilities
* Answer telephone, take messages and refer to the Staff Nurse.
* Participate in ward/unit meetings and encourage effective communication.
* Communicate with staff, patients and visitors.
* Recognise and respond to situations within the work area, reporting to the nurse in charge.
* Assist with risk assessments.
* Assist in the collection of specimens for ward/laboratory investigation.
* Assist the Registered Nurse in duties such as outpatient clinics, routine specimens, urine testing, vital signs, blood glucose, venepuncture, cannulation, basic life support.
Qualifications and training
* NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent qualification/experience.
* Care certificate.
* English & Mathematics at GCSE grade A–C (9–4) or level 2 functional skills.
Knowledge and experience
* Previous care environment experience or demonstrable caring nature/life experience.
* Understanding of strict confidentiality.
* Working knowledge of complex care needs and safeguarding, domestic abuse and mental health.
Specific skills
* Basic computer/keyboard skills.
* Fine motor skills for venepuncture, phlebotomy and other clinical tasks.
* Good interpersonal and communication skills.
* Ability to prioritise and organise work.
* Record keeping competency in handwritten and electronic records.
* Ability to manage stress in themselves and others.
* Willingness to undertake new skills and training.
* Flexibility, adaptability, reliability and punctuality.
* Healthcare competencies appropriate to the area of work.
