Overview

This is a Specialist Grade in Cardiology position for 10 programmed activities per week with an additional PA available subject to negotiation. The post includes participation in a 1:7 Cardiology "hot" 1-week on-call at consultant level. Teaching and participation in audit and research are encouraged. The Cardiology service is provided from Ward 7, with the Coronary Care Unit, Cardiac Unit (Cardiac Catheter Laboratory, pacing room, recovery area and clinic assessment room). Cardiac Catheterisation sessions are shared between participating Consultants and the Specialist Grade. There are 7.5 clinically based programmed activities and 2.5 supporting programmed activities.

The post holder will join an existing team of six cardiologists and undertake outpatient and inpatient activities at Walsall Manor Hospital NHS Trust. Depending on skill sets, there may be involvement in the development of services within the CCG and the Black Country Alliance in heart failure. The consultants have interests in imaging, PCI, heart failure complex devices and EP. The Cardiology department has a mentoring programme for new Specialist Doctors; the successful candidate will have a designated supervisor and annual appraisal with set PDPs.


Main duties

1. To provide a high-quality cardiology service to patients by developing practice in light of research evidence and through audit against clinical standards.
2. To advise primary and secondary care colleagues on cardiac problems and oversee internal referrals assessed by junior and specialist cardiac teams.
3. To provide a comprehensive outpatient service from clinics in the main Outpatient Department and in specialist clinics within the Clinical Measurement Unit.
4. To support teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students and Postgraduate Medical Education; the Trust supports CPD for the successful candidate.
5. To support and encourage audit and research and develop links with academic initiatives.
6. To actively participate in continuing medical education and personal development programmes.
7. To support ongoing development of cardiology services in line with existing programmes and to have an interest in community cardiology, including supporting the community heart failure virtual ward.

Person Specification

Qualifications

* Basic Medical Degree (e.g. MBBS)
* MRCP or equivalent
* Full GMC registration. Licensed to practice.
* An appropriate higher Cardiology qualification
* Current ALS qualification (within last 3 years) or requirement to obtain within 3 months of appointment
* MD/PhD

Experience

* Evidence of teaching, training and supporting educational needs of individuals and teams
* Ability to provide clinical supervision and leadership and to raise concerns about learners’ performance
* Evidence of published work and/or research experience
* Ability to undertake echocardiography
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care
* Minimum of 12 years’ medical work experience
* Experience of conducting clinical audit

Skills

* Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
* Understanding of leadership principles and quality improvement
* Experience with multisource feedback in safety and quality improvement
* Ability to organise and prioritise workload
* Ability to plan strategically and exercise sound judgment under pressure
* Ability to participate in the training of junior medical staff
