Colorectal Surgical Care Practitioner

An exciting opportunity to join our team of clinicians and advanced clinical practitioners. We are seeking a highly motivated Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) in Colorectal Surgery to work with Consultant Surgeons and resident doctors and deliver high‑quality care to the Trust and its patients.

The role of Colorectal SCP involves playing a key part in the wider Colorectal service. We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic SCP who can work with multiple professional teams to ensure the patient journey is optimised.

In addition to proven clinical abilities, the post holder will need excellent communication skills and be able to competently and accurately action recommendations for patients from wider teams. The successful applicant will work within a team of supportive colleagues from varying professional backgrounds at multiple sites across the county.

The post holder will act as a patient advocate to ensure that patient concerns and needs are heard and acted upon.

Successful applicants must provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.


Main duties of the job

The Practitioner will receive training to run Colorectal Clinics independently with on‑site support. Administration time has been built into the Job Plan. The post holder will support the team in ward rounds and support the Consultant Surgeons in theatres with delegated consent, patient positioning, first assisting and discharge summaries. The post holder will also be expected to train junior residents.

Job responsibilities

* Undertake advanced practitioner‑level holistic assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patients care needs pre‑, intra‑ and postoperatively.
* Undertake initial assessment to determine differential diagnoses, utilising advanced critical‑thinking and decision‑making skills, deciding the appropriate investigations and when necessary referrer to senior medical colleagues.
* On a daily basis, act autonomously to provide expert clinical/technical care, contributing to the diagnosis, specialist care and treatment plans for highly complex patients.
* Initiate treatment plans and support to ensure the ongoing safety of the patient under predetermined parameters.
* Demonstrate continual evaluation of practice within the defined specialist area and take responsibility for making agreed changes where appropriate.
* Proactively initiate treatment plans for patients requiring urgent intervention including fluid resuscitation, oxygen therapy, antibiotics or other urgent treatment.
* Undertake procedures such as cannulation, venepuncture, arterial blood gases to facilitate efficient urgent care.
* Initiate relevant investigations such as X‑ray, ultrasound, ECG and blood tests to enable timely diagnosis and facilitate early decision making.
* Prescribe and review medication, appropriate to patient needs in the context of acute illness.
* Discuss and agree assessment outcomes with patients, carers and other healthcare professionals.
* Authorise the decision to admit patients and/or proactively initiate discharge.
* Ensure accurate and essential written and verbal information is relayed to staff, ensuring safety.
* Refer to appropriate practitioner when abilities are not within own scope of practice.
* Ensure dignity, privacy, and cultural and religious beliefs are respected at all times.
* Co‑ordinate care of colorectal surgery patients through multidisciplinary team and clinical services.
* Undertake delegated consent for named procedures, following appropriate training and competency.
* Undertake duties commensurate with role of Surgical Care Practitioner including first surgical assisting, suturing, deep retraction and surgical interventions as competence is achieved.
