Overview
British Antarctic Survey is recruiting diesel power generation technicians to maintain, repair and support the main power generators and other mobile plant and small petrol generators at our five research stations in Antarctica.
Key Responsibilities
* Maintain and repair all diesel generators.
* Service non‑mobile plant and equipment, both petrol and diesel.
* Maintain mobile generator plant, including small Honda petrol generators.
* Maintain mobile plant and equipment such as Mewp, air compressors, chainsaws.
* Perform aspects of power generation and controller support.
* Manage bulk fuel storage, fuelling and station fuel transfer delivery.
* Report problems or work requests to the line manager.
* Carry out the planned preventive maintenance (PPM) programme.
* Perform non‑routine repair and maintenance to ensure safe, efficient operation.
* Maintain tools, resources, workshops and plant areas.
* Maintain and revise material and tools stock lists for required spare parts.
* Document all works carried out through the PPM system.
* Record and document reactive works.
* Advise on additions to the PPM system.
* Record weekly and monthly installed meter readings.
* Produce annual reports on plant condition and recommended improvements.
* Stand in for other staff to ensure operational efficiency.
* Undertake other general duties as directed by the line manager and Station Leader.
Key Requirements
* Full apprenticeship, BTEC, City & Guilds, or NVQ with a recognised qualification in petrol/diesel engine maintenance.
* Practical post‑qualification site experience.
* Knowledge of light industrial electrical power generators and systems.
* Knowledge of power generation control systems such as Deep Sea or ComAp controllers.
* Ability to use tools and materials.
* Basic computer skills using Microsoft Office.
* Self‑motivated with strong team‑working skills.
* Ability to manage time, anticipate problems and report issues.
* Ability to work under pressure, quality focused and health and safety focused.
* Good communication and problem‑solving skills.
* Proficient in written and spoken English.
* Medical fitness to work in Antarctic conditions.
Desirable
* Report writing experience.
* Previous use of electronic planned maintenance systems.
