Base Location: Successful applicants must be based at one of our Scottish locations and will be expected to spend 50% of their working week in the office – Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen or Inverness.
Salary: £78,400 - £117,600 + car/car allowance + performance‑related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Role Overview
This is a role where your expertise truly matters and your voice will shape the future of Underground Cable (UGC) engineering at a time of major transformation. As Lead Principal UGC Engineer you’ll play a central role in building a cleaner, more resilient energy network, working collaboratively with talented colleagues across SSEN Transmission.
You’ll guide the development of standardised, future‑ready designs, encourage innovative thinking, and create an environment where people feel supported to do their best work. This is an opportunity to be a hands‑on engineer in a leadership position, influence meaningful change, and contribute to a fairer, greener energy future for communities across Scotland.
Responsibilities
* Continue to be a hands‑on engineer, applying your technical expertise while providing thoughtful, trusted leadership across UGC projects. Support, empower and develop specialist engineers, nurturing a positive, inclusive team culture where people can grow and thrive.
* Bring teams together to navigate and resolve complex technical challenges through open dialogue and collaborative problem‑solving.
* Promote a caring approach to health, safety and environmental excellence, and uphold CDM, ESQCR and SSEN standards.
* Encourage creativity and continuous improvement, championing innovative ideas and representing SSEN Transmission across industry networks.
Qualifications
* A strong background delivering impactful UGC engineering projects and guiding teams with empathy, clarity and confidence.
* A degree in a relevant engineering discipline, with Chartered Engineer status (or equivalent) welcomed.
* Deep knowledge of UGC engineering, associated legislation and industry standards, paired with a thoughtful, pragmatic approach.
* Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills, with the ability to connect with others and explain complex ideas in a clear, supportive way.
* A collaborative mindset, a commitment to continuous learning, and a genuine passion for helping people and projects succeed.
