Senior Technical Author / Technical Writer

An expanding and highly innovative engineering company is seeking a Senior Technical Author to take ownership of its product documentation function. This is a newly elevated role, offering the opportunity to shape how technical information is created, structured, and delivered across the business.
The Role
As Senior Technical Author, you will transition documentation responsibilities away from engineering and operations teams into a dedicated, specialist function. You’ll work at the heart of the engineering team, collaborating closely with hardware, firmware, and systems engineers to produce clear, structured, and accurate documentation.
You will create and maintain:
* Installation and integration manuals (for professional marine technicians)
* End-user documentation (for trained mariners operating equipment at sea)
* Internal documentation, including manufacturing work instructions and service/maintenance guides
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys translating complex electro-mechanical systems into precise, user-friendly documentation for technically skilled audiences.
Key Responsibilities
* Own and manage all product documentation across the business
* Work directly with engineers to extract and validate technical information
* Produce clear, consistent, and structured manuals for multiple audiences
* Develop internal documentation standards and best practices
* Support both external product documentation and internal operational guides
Essential Experience
* Proven background as a Technical Author / Technical Writer in an engineering or technical environment
* Strong understanding of electro-mechanical systems
* Excellent written English with a clear, concise, and practical style
* Experience writing for technically competent (non-novice) users
* Confidence working closely with engineers and asking detailed questions
* High attention to detail and consistency
Highly Desirable
* Experience in marine, offshore, industrial, or safety-critical environments
* Familiarity with:
* Electrical wiring and connectors
* Sensors and instrumentation
* Embedded systems or firmware-driven products
* Experience documenting installations in constrained or harsh environments
* Understanding of relevant standards (IEC, ISO, DNV, Lloyd’s, etc.)
Tools & Methods
* Experience with structured authoring tools (e.g. Adobe suite, Confluence)
* Comfortable working with CAD drawings and technical diagrams
* Familiarity with version control and document management systems (e.g. SVN, JIRA)
