The Opportunity
The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a Technician to join its skilled Technical Services team of approximately 35 technical staff supporting a diverse and expanding range of research and teaching activities. The appointee will be primarily responsible for assisting with the safe, sustainable, and efficient operation of the School’s mechanical engineering teaching laboratories. This includes providing technical support for student and research projects, assisting in the delivery of teaching and demonstrations, manufacturing components and apparatus, repairing and maintaining equipment, and managing stock.
The mechanical engineering teaching facilities include two main laboratories, a welding bay, and a flexible teaching space, equipped with manufacturing and fabricating tools such as pillar drills, 3D printers, a CNC router, laser cutters, and MIG/TIG welding units. The lab maintains a range of hand tools and stock materials to support projects and repairs.
The successful candidate should demonstrate enthusiasm for engineering and personal development, with a commitment to keeping pace with emerging technologies. Relevant experience in a mechanical workshop environment and education to N/SVQ Level 3 or equivalent in mechanical engineering are required. Alternatively, additional technical experience in demanding roles is acceptable. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, health & safety understanding, and a strong service orientation are essential as the role involves customer interaction.
