Overview

Join to apply for the Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist role at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust.

The Young Adult (YA) Project at HMP Bronzefield is a pilot project responding to increased self-harm and violence among 18-25-year-old women in custody. The service is delivered through a partnership between CNWL, Sodexo, and the Women’s Estate Psychology Service, and is informed by trauma-aware principles with emphasis on relational security and co-production. The clinical model adopts a holistic approach to assessment and care planning with scope for ongoing development and flexibility in service provision.


Main duties

* Provide specialist psychological assessments of young adults in HMP Bronzefield using diverse data sources (psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, structured observations, and semi-structured interviews).
* Develop individual psychological formulations and lead on team formulations; develop and utilise a range of psychological interventions to support the team and the prison in understanding and managing the young adults.
* Formulate and implement plans for psychological treatment and/or management of a young adult’s mental health and behavioural presentation, using an evidence-based conceptual framework; deliver both individual and group interventions as needed.
* Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to ensure service delivery is informed by psychological understanding of strengths and needs.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

* Contribute to the development and articulation of best practice in psychology/psychological therapy; engage in regular supervision and appraisal; stay updated with developments in psychology and related fields.
* Maintain high standards of clinical record keeping, data entry, report writing, and professional self-governance in line with professional codes and Trust policies.
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation and local/national policies relevant to the patient group and mental health.
* Ensure diversity considerations (race, culture, identity, gender, sexuality) are reflected in all professional activity and service delivery.
* Consult with service users about their care and empower them to contribute to service development and improvement.
* Coordinate with other counselling providers within the prison to ensure robust referral pathways and appropriate case division.


Person specification


Education and qualifications

Essential criteria:

* Doctoral level training in clinical, counselling or forensic psychology (accredited by the BPS) with training in developmental lifespan psychology, psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, and two or more psychological therapies; registered with HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist, or a recognised postgraduate qualification in CBT (or equivalent) with BABCP accreditation or other recognised therapy accreditation; evidence of post-qualification specialist training in a relevant area.
* Evidence of post-qualification specialist training, experience and expertise relevant to this role.

Desirable criteria:

* Additional CPD qualifications, especially in trauma, neurodiversity, research methodology, staff training, or related fields.


Skills, knowledge, abilities

Essential criteria:

* Expertise in complex psychological assessment and intervention; strong written and verbal communication with clients, families, carers and colleagues; ability to provide professional consultation.
* Broad clinical knowledge and IT proficiency relevant to the role; ability to supervise junior staff and trainees; teaching and training abilities; capability to govern clinical practice under challenging conditions; knowledge of offender mental health and personality disorders.
* Ability to work with individuals presenting complex needs including sexual and violent offending, self-harm and suicidal behaviours; strong planning and organizational skills; commitment to continuing professional development; excellent IT skills.

Desirable criteria:

* Knowledge of specialized psychological therapies for difficult-to-treat groups; ability to apply knowledge creatively to develop new initiatives; capability to write reports for varied audiences; doctoral-level knowledge of research methodology and multivariate data analysis as used in clinical psychology.

* Excellent interpersonal skills; team player; strong self-awareness and commitment to self-care;


Previous experience

Essential criteria:

* Specialist post-qualification experience as an applied psychologist with substantial clinical supervision (approximately 50 hours).
* Experience working with diverse client groups across the life course and handling high-emotion, distressing contexts; experience representing psychology in multidisciplinary care; experience working in multicultural settings; teaching, training or supervision experience; knowledge of relevant guidance and legislation.

Desirable criteria:

* Experience in secure environments/forensic mental health, trauma-informed work with young adults, advanced neuropsychology knowledge, and involvement in research or service evaluation in secure settings.
