About the University:\n\nThe School of Engineering and Physical Sciences has an international research reputation and close connection with the professional and industrial world of science, engineering and technology. Our research ranges from fundamental sciences through to engineering applications, all of which are supported by strong external funding. We have around 120 full-time academic staff who drive this research activity and are based in 5 research institutes: the Institute of Chemical Sciences, the Institute of Photonics & Quantum Sciences, the Institute of Mechanical, Process & Energy Engineering, the Institute of Sensors, Signals & Systems and the Institute of Biological Chemistry, BioPhysics & BioEngineering.\n\nThe School of Engineering and Physical Science has an exciting opportunity for a Modern Apprentice Technician (Electronics) to work within a busy Electronics Workshop.\n\n\nThe Modern Apprentice will be joining an Electronics Engineering Support team which is committed to supplying the highest quality support to all teaching disciplines and enthusiastic research groups within the School of Engineering and Physical Science. We are looking to employ an Apprentice who is keen to progress in the world of engineering and who has a real passion and desire to understand the workings of electronics and related processes. The successful candidate must have a flexible, enthusiastic attitude with good team working ability. The ability to follow instruction and self-motivation is also a pre-requisite.\n\nOver a period of 3.5 years, the apprenticeship will be a mix of you attending college and working in an electronics workshop gaining hands on experience. You will be in full-time attendance at college for the first few months in Year 1 of your Apprenticeship, with day release attendance at college and the remainder of time workplace based, and time spent on-the-job learning, developing knowledge and skills in Years 1 to 4.\n\nHours of Work â Fulltime â Monday-Friday, hours as required. \nThe Role holder will be expected to be flexible in the hours worked normally 8:30am to 4:15pm Monday to Friday working 35 hours per week. Occasional work at weekends may be required for Open Days, student events etc. \n\n\nAnnual Leave/Holidays\n28 days annual leave (pro rata).\nIn addition to these days, the Edinburgh Campus is closed on fixed days (known as âbuilding closed daysâ or public holidays) â these fixed days are listed via the University Calendar and all-staff e-mails. We want to increase the diversity of our workplace to underpin a dynamic and creative environment.\n\n As your skills develop you will be involved with designing, constructing, modifying, maintaining and repairing a wide range of equipment for both teaching and research. \n\nUnder instruction from the Workshop Supervisor, the successful candidates will receive on-the-job training in the workplace to learn the following:-\n\nâ¢\tWork and train alongside a senior technician in the installation, maintenance, modification and fabrication of electronic and electrical equipment required for teaching and research.\nâ¢\tLearn to operate the range of electronic equipment in the school laboratories.\nâ¢\tUse Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages to design circuit boards and circuit diagrams.\nâ¢\tLearn to program microcontrollers.\nâ¢\tDevelop manual skills - building and commissioning of bespoke equipment.\nâ¢\tLearn to work with a standard range of manual and semi-automatic metal working machines in the school support workshops.\nâ¢\tWith guidance, participate in straightforward project work.\nâ¢\tSupport in undergraduate teaching labs.\n\nAll tasks will be at a level appropriate to the apprenticeâs developing skills and under the guidance of the Workshop Supervisor and others in the technical team.\n\n\n\nPersonal development\nTo complete training and practical work in the workshops and become competent in the range of skills listed above. To attend college as outlined above to gain a full background in engineering, completing all coursework to a high standard and within agreed time frames.\n\nPersonal Responsibility\nTo keep yourself, your working environment, tools and equipment neat and in good order, to the satisfaction of the Workshop Supervisor, and to take joint responsibility for a safe and tidy laboratory.\n\nTeamwork\nTo be an active and enthusiastic member of the Workshop support team, supporting colleagues as need be. This includes undertaking additional tasks which may be reasonably requested of you from time to time by the Workshop Supervisor and others in the technical team.\n\nPlease note that this job description is not exhaustive, and the role holder may be required to undertake other relevant duties commensurate with the grading of the post. Activities may be subject to amendment over time as the role develops and/or priorities and requirements evolve.\n Education, Qualifications and Experience\n\nEssential Criteria\n\nâ¢\tMinimum of three general standard grades are required two of which should be in English and Maths. A technical or science subject at the same or higher level is desirable.\nâ¢\tExperience in any relevant work or activity that showed problem solving and analytical skills.\nâ¢\tIT literacy.\nâ¢\tAble to communicate easily and understandably in English.\nâ¢\tAble to demonstrate an aptitude for the skills taught in the apprenticeship.\nâ¢\tAbility to work effectively as part of a team and willingness to work flexible.\nâ¢\tBe able to work to your own initiative.\nâ¢\tBe comfortable working in a busy environment.\n\nDesirable Criteria\n\nâ¢\tHigher grade pass in Mathematics.\nâ¢\tExperience in working within Technical workshop environment.\nâ¢\tExperience using Computer-Aided Design software.\n\n\n\nTeamwork\n1.\tActively participate in, contribute to and support colleagues across the team and University\n2.\tCover duties for and support other colleagues within the team as required\n3.\tDemonstrate tasks to new colleagues \n\nService Excellence \n1.\tCarry out duties to the agreed service standards set by the University in a timely fashion\n2.\tKeep the working area clean and tidy in line with appropriate H&S requirements\n3.\tReport any concerns regarding standards of cleanliness and/or health and safety to the supervisor immediately\n4.\tCreate a positive image of the University by being responsive, prompt and courteous when responding to requests or enquiries from customers \n5.\tProvide a friendly service which gives the customer what they have asked for\n\nClear and Consistent Communications \n1.\tAlways maintain confidentiality by following university policies and guidance relating to dealing with confidential or personal information\n2.\tFollow clear verbal and written instructions (in English)\n3.\tComplete checklists, stock records or similar documents clearly as required for the role\n\nPlanning and Organising\n1.\tCarry out routine tasks and instructions from the standard daily schedule to the required standard in a timely fashion\n2.\tCarry out occasional one-off tasks and instructions as directed by the supervisor\n3.\tProvide appropriate support for absent colleagues as directed by the supervisor\n4.\tAt the end of the working day tidy and clear up work area and leave everything as it should be for the next person working there\n\nInitiative and Problem Solving\n1.\tFollow standard procedures, training manuals and guidelines to solve day to day issues\n2.\tUse experience and initiative to decide when to pass non-standard issues your supervisor or line manager\n3.\tMake suggestions to your supervisor for better working practice or solving problems based in experience \n\nDecision Making\n1.\tUnderstand which tools/equipment should be used when carrying out work tasks\n2.\tRefer any non-standard requests or issues (for example from customers) to the supervisor in line with agreed procedures\n3.\tUnderstand and follow the process to escalate any customer issues or concerns to the supervisor in a timely fashion \n\n\n\nManagement Responsibilities\n1.\tThere are no management responsibilities within this position, but you may be asked to take on supervisor duties on occasion as part of your personal development.\n\nCitizenship \nâ¢\tAlways Demonstrate the University Values through performance and behaviour \nâ¢\tParticipate in ad-hoc duties to support the team/University and for personal development \nâ¢\tSupport newer or inexperienced colleagues within and outside the University by offering support, help and advice \nâ¢\tPositively promote the University internally and externally through positive behaviour and supporting University-wide activities\n
