Job Summary
* We are currently seeking a qualified and motivated Environmental Health Practitioner to join a busy Health Protection team on a temporary basis.
* The role focuses on ensuring compliance with food hygiene, food standards, and health and safety legislation across a wide range of premises.
* You will be responsible for both routine inspections and reactive investigations to help protect public health and support community wellbeing.
Key Duties/Accountabilities
* Conduct inspections and audits of food businesses to ensure compliance with food hygiene and food standards legislation
* Carry out health and safety inspections in line with national and local policies
* Investigate complaints and incidents related to food safety, health hazards, or public health concerns
* Undertake enforcement action where necessary in accordance with relevant legislation and enforcement policies
* Prepare and present reports, evidence, and recommendations for legal proceedings when required
* Deliver and support operational and strategic action plans to improve compliance and regulatory outcomes
* Provide accurate and high-quality advice to businesses and stakeholders on food safety, standards, and legislation
* Work collaboratively with internal teams, partner agencies, and the wider community to deliver health protection outcomes
* Support the development and implementation of intelligence-led regulatory projects and campaigns
* Supervise and guide junior or support staff when required
Skills/Experience
* Minimum of 2 years' regulatory experience in food safety or health and safety enforcement (preferred)
* Strong understanding of UK food hygiene, food standards, and health & safety legislation
* Excellent communication, negotiation, and report writing skills
* Experience in preparing enforcement cases, including giving evidence in court or tribunals
* Competent in risk assessment, inspection protocols, and use of digital regulatory systems
* Proven ability to manage own caseload effectively and work independently as well as in a team
* Experience in a local authority or similar public health/regulatory environment (desirable)
Additional Information
* This is a hybrid role with a mix of remote working and office/site visits. Ideal for experienced professionals, though applications from recent graduates with relevant qualifications will also be considered.
* Degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Health (essential).
* Certificate of Registration with Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) or equivalent.
