Band 5 Senior Tradesperson (Mechanical)

We are looking for highly skilled mechanical specialist responsible for maintaining, repairing, and optimising complex mechanical systems across a large healthcare estate. The role ensures the safe, reliable operation of HVAC, medical gas, water, heating, and ventilation systems while acting as a Competent Person under key HTMs and statutory regulations. Provides expert diagnostic capability, conducts planned and reactive maintenance, and performs commissioning, testing, and compliance tasks to national standards.

The position oversees maintenance assistants, apprentices, and contractors, ensuring high quality workmanship and minimal disruption to clinical services. Utilises CAFM systems to prioritise workload, supports the on‑call rota, and contributes to audits, risk assessments, and continuous service improvement. Works autonomously in challenging environments, applying strong problem‑solving, organisational, and communication skills. Promotes a safe working culture, supports team development, and upholds Trust values of kindness, connection, and boldness.


Main duties of the job

Carry out technical tasks on a wide range of mechanical installations, applying specialist knowledge to inspect, test, adjust, and restore equipment across the estate. Undertake detailed fault investigations, review engineering data, and implement corrective measures in line with regulatory obligations and organisational procedures. Interpret technical drawings, complete system checks, and verify performance of newly installed components.

Coordinate daily activity for maintenance assistants and external contractors, ensuring they follow safety rules and correct processes. Liaise with site teams to schedule works, update progress records, and log findings using digital management tools. Review risks, update assessments, and contribute to improving maintenance programmes and work methods.

Prepare plant areas, access equipment safely, and handle tools requiring precision and control. Support emergency responses, including infrastructure incidents and adverse weather situations. Maintain workshop standards, monitor stock requirements, and assist with minor alterations to building systems. Engage in training, share expertise with colleagues, and participate in audits to uphold high engineering and compliance standards.

Qualifications

* Basic education to GCSE/'O' Level in Maths
* and English or post-Secondary Education
* training in a relevant field
* NVQ Level 3 in a relevant Mechanical
* Engineering or Building Services Engineering
* or equivalent additional knowledge of
* working in Mechanical Engineering acquired
* through completion of City & Guilds of
* Course 205 in Mechanical Engineering
* Maintenance Part 2 (205-3).
* Course 596 in Plumbing Advanced Craft
* Certificate (596-2) in Both - Sanitary
* Plumbing Plus, Installation and
* Maintenance of Domestic Heating
* Systems and Appliances.
* Course 596 Plumbing Craft Certificate
* Service Welding Advanced Craft
* Demonstrable experience of meeting the
* equivalent standard.


Experience

* Experience in a complex HVAC engineering
* LTHW Systems
* Domestic Hot and Cold-Water Systems
* Ventilation and air conditioning
* Pumping and pressure boosting
* Vacuum and compressed air plants
* Firefighting installations
* Computerised building management controls
* Automated water treatment plant
* Laundry equipment as beds, hoists, wheelchairs, etc.
* Hydrotherapy pool
* Detailed knowledge of Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. Interprets the regulations and notifies line manager of any non‑compliance as and when encountered.
* Holds a current certificate of training and is competent in the operation and use of bonded abrasive wheels for compliance with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998
* Water storage systems
* Thermostatic Mixing Valves
* Domestic above ground drainage
* Multi skilled to make safe Mechanical/Electrical/Fabric Systems


Additional Criteria

* Available for potential future shift working
* Physically demanding role requiring manual handling of loads, extremes of temperature and the ability to work at heights or in confined spaces
* Appreciation of their own limitations
* Valid Driving licence
