Role Overview

We are seeking a motivated, empathetic, and proactive Behaviour Mentor to join a primary school in Hitchin, Hertfordshire. This school is dedicated to nurturing the social, emotional, and academic development of every child and values inclusion, pastoral support, and high-quality teaching.

As a Behaviour Mentor, you will work with pupils who require support managing behaviour, regulating emotions, or engaging effectively in learning. Children you support may face challenges including SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs, ADHD, anxiety, low self-esteem, or difficulties forming positive peer relationships.

Your role is central to creating a positive, structured, and inclusive environment in which children feel understood, supported, and capable of success. You will work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and leadership to ensure every pupil receives consistent and personalised support.

-----------------------------------

Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role

The Behaviour Mentor’s role is to support pupils in overcoming barriers to learning caused by behavioural and emotional challenges. You will provide both proactive and reactive support:

* Proactive support: Deliver targeted mentoring sessions, social skills groups, and structured interventions to help pupils build resilience, confidence, and self-regulation.

* Reactive support: Offer timely support during behavioural incidents, helping pupils manage emotions, repair relationships, and return calmly to learning.

The school implements a trauma-informed, restorative approach, recognising that challenging behaviour often signals underlying needs. As a Behaviour Mentor, you will help children understand their feelings, develop coping strategies, and engage positively with peers and adults.

-----------------------------------

Key Responsibilities

In Hitchin, your responsibilities will include:

* Providing 1:1 mentoring for children requiring additional emotional or behavioural support.

* Leading small group sessions to develop social skills, self-confidence, emotional regulation, and problem-solving.

* Supporting children in classrooms to maintain focus, engagement, and appropriate behaviour.

* Assisting during unstructured times such as break times, lunchtimes, and transitions, helping prevent conflict and promoting positive social interaction.

* Calmly de-escalating challenging behaviour using restorative strategies.

* Supporting children after incidents to reflect on behaviour, repair relationships, and develop strategies for improvement.

* Collaborating with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral staff to design and implement individual behaviour support plans.

* Maintaining accurate records of interventions, incidents, and outcomes.

* Promoting restorative practices, empathy, and problem-solving skills.

* Adhering to safeguarding policies and maintaining professional boundaries at all times.

-----------------------------------

The School Environment

This primary school in Hitchin serves a diverse and engaged community, focusing on academic excellence alongside social and emotional development. The school believes that children learn best when they feel safe, valued, and supported.

Leadership recognises the importance of Behaviour Mentors and provides comprehensive guidance, supervision, and professional development. Staff work collaboratively to ensure that every pupil’s social, emotional, and behavioural needs are met effectively.

The school uses trauma-informed and restorative approaches alongside structured behaviour management, focusing on long-term emotional growth, self-regulation, and positive peer relationships.

-----------------------------------

Students You Will Support

Children requiring Behaviour Mentor support may:

* Display disruptive, withdrawn, or challenging behaviour.

* Struggle with emotional regulation, anxiety, or low self-esteem.

* Have SEMH needs, ADHD, or attachment-related difficulties.

* Experience difficulties with peer relationships, transitions, or routines.

* Be at risk of disengagement from learning or social participation.

Your role will help children develop resilience, confidence, and positive behavioural strategies, enabling them to engage fully in learning and school life.

-----------------------------------

This role is ideal for individuals who:

* Have experience supporting primary-aged children in educational or care settings.

* Are patient, empathetic, and emotionally resilient.

* Can manage challenging behaviour effectively and supportively.

* Are motivated to work in pastoral care and support inclusion.

* Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.

* Ability to remain calm, professional, and consistent under pressure.

* Commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and equality.

* Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development.
