About the role

The University of Leicester is proud to be part of the UK Nuclear Deterrence Network, a collaborative initiative with King's College London and the Royal United Services Institute. As part of this network, we are seeking to appoint a Nuclear Deterrence Fellow to undertake independent research on any aspect of nuclear deterrence. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of evidence-based research and policy recommendations, and help build a UK-based community of practice in this critical field. The Fellow will be expected to produce two peer-reviewed articles and two policy papers, and actively support the Network's activities, including the Deterrence Futures Programme.

Based in Leicester, the Fellow will be line-managed by Professor Andrew Futter and supported through the University's Mentoring System. They will participate in regular Network meetings, workshops, and conferences, and engage in professional development tailored to their experience. The role also includes contributing to the Defence Futures Fellowship Programme and maintaining a public-facing research presence. Applicants must be UK nationals or citizens of NATO or UK-allied countries.

About you

You will hold a PhD (or equivalent research experience) in International Relations or a related field, with demonstrable expertise in nuclear politics and/or deterrence. You will have a track record of research productivity appropriate to your career stage, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ability to work independently and collaboratively, plan and deliver research activities, and engage with diverse audiences is essential.

We particularly welcome applications from groups historically under-represented in deterrence research. The University of Leicester is committed to equality and diversity, and is proud to be an impact champion for HeForShe and a Bronze award holder under Athena Swan.

As part of the University's ongoing commitment to professional development, this role will also be considered on a seconded basis for existing staff members. Please ensure this is discussed with your line manager prior to applying. More information regarding secondments can be foundhere -
