With that in mind, the in-house Occupational Health and Wellbeing department at West Midlands Police is going through a period of change. The department welcomed a new Head of Occupational Health and Wellbeing in December 2024 which has led to some changes, as a result we have some roles to offer which will enable us to improve the multi-disciplinary services we provide for a Force which is the second largest in the country with over 7,500 officers and 3,500 police staff. Based at Tally Ho!, Edgbaston, Birmingham this role can offer some hybrid working to meet service delivery requirements, and will require some travel across the West Midlands Police estate for some clinics. 1 FTE Occupational Health Nurse Advisor Grade 7 - £42,897 to £48,894 We are seeking an Occupational Health Nurse Advisor to join our great in-house Occupational Health and Wellbeing team. As a full time and permanent role, it is a great opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join the team and support the service we provide to both the officers and staff of West Midlands Police. You have at least 3 years’ post registration experience, and will be enthusiastic, organised, a good communicator, with a positive and flexible approach to work. We are particularly interested in applications from Registered Nurses - Mental Health (RNMH) for this vacancy. The successful candidate(s) will work as part of a multi-disciplinary clinical team including Force Medical Advisors, Occupational Health Nurse Advisors, Trauma Therapists, Occupational Health Practice Nurses, and Occupational Health Technicians. Independent assessment of an individual’s fitness for role is the main part of this role, following the standards, policies, and guidance to reach a safe, effective and efficient decision. A robust induction plan will provide the successful candidate with all the necessary support and advice in the early stages of employment with West Midlands Police, and following on from that induction there will be plenty of opportunity to learn and grow as an Occupational Health professional, whether that is though contribution to/participation in the development of wider service provision, and/or policy and standards. Skills, Knowledge and Experience Essential Registered Nurse (Adult (RNA or RN1) and/or Mental Health (RNMH)) Significant (circa 3-5 years) experience post Registration Ability to work autonomously assessing patient/client risk vs environment, escalating concerns to a Senior Clinician, (i.e., Clinical Managers, Head of department, Force Medical Advisor) as necessary. Ability to undertake assessments and produce meaningful/helpful reports for key stakeholders. Knowledge of/Trained for the full remit of Occupational Health and Wellbeing activity (or a willingness to learn). Balance clinical risk and customer service as focus for service delivery Passionate about all aspects of Occupational Health and Wellbeing (Inc. physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental health) Excellent communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills Influential (both up and down) Professional Critical thinker with the ability to see the bigger picture. Able to understand the strategic aims and objectives of the organisation Flexibility towards work Uses initiative, and looks for continuous improvement opportunities Collaborative, and focused Able to build and maintain strong professional working relationships (including (but not limited to) colleagues, contractors, and key stakeholders) Desirable Registered Occupational Health Nurse (Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (OH)) Occupational Health Qualification (Post Graduate Diploma or Degree) Experience of working as an Occupational Health Nurse Advisor performing the full remit of Occupational Health and Wellbeing Up to date knowledge of best practice in Occupational Health and Wellbeing, including mental health and ergonomics Experience of working in policing or another blue light service / similar public sector Knowledge of the Police Regulations and their implications in assessing fitness for work A positive, passionate individual with a strong background in organising and delivering health and wellbeing focused activities within a large and complex organisation. Medical: Appointment to this role will be dependent upon successfully medical checks, which may include a drugs test and if required a fitness test. Hours: The post holder will be required to work core service hours (Monday – Friday) with some flexibility on the hours of work to accommodate the service demands, this flexibility is with due regard to prevailing workloads and priorities. Working other hours, such as Evenings, Weekends and/or Bank Holidays would be by exception based on service need.
