Job location
Based at Culham, Oxfordshire. Onsite working expected 3 days a week; flexible working requests supported.
Role
As the Head of Risk and Assurance, you will lead the delivery of UKAEA’s risk and assurance strategy, drive cultural improvement, embed best‑practice, advise the Board and senior leadership, and develop a high‑performing team.
Additional Responsibilities
* Develop and deliver the risk and assurance strategy, operating model and improvement plan.
* Monitor internal controls, embed lessons learned and drive a pro‑active risk culture.
* Provide visible governance in risk and assurance, representing UKAEA nationally and internationally.
* Coach and manage the risk and assurance team to ensure effective service delivery.
* Oversee enterprise risk, assurance programmes and programme board reporting.
* Develop risk appetite, integrate risk and opportunity management into decision‑making and conduct horizon scanning and workshops.
Qualifications
Essential Requirements:
* Professional risk management qualification (e.g., IRM Certificate/Diploma or working towards IRM certification).
* Significant experience managing systems certified to ISO standards.
* Passion for good risk and assurance culture.
* Pro‑active approach to safety and UK compliance in design.
* Strong commercial awareness and economic decision‑making.
* Background knowledge of fusion science/technology/engineering.
* Excellent board report writing skills.
Desirable Requirements:
* Professional project management qualification.
* Lead auditor/quality systems training with experience implementing assurance quality improvement programmes.
