A vacancy has arisen for a Band 5 Biomedical Scientist in the Haematology & Blood Transfusion Laboratory at Hull Royal Infirmary. Applicants who have successfully completed an IBMS Specialist Portfolio will be employed on the appropriate AfC Band 6 rate if successful. Applications will also be considered from applicants with an IBMS accredited degree and the intention to complete the HCPC registration portfolio.
The successful candidate will regularly rotate through all sections of the Haematology & Blood Transfusion department and will be required to participate in the 24/7 shift system.
As an IBMS approved training laboratory, we encourage and support all Band 5 staff to obtain the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Science.
Responsibilities
1. Carry out the analysis of patient samples providing a range of diagnostic results, including Full Blood Count, Routine Coagulation and Specialist Haemostasis investigations, Blood Film Morphology, Blood Grouping & Antibody investigations, and crossmatch for blood transfusion.
2. Ensure the quality and timeliness of results through internal quality controls (IQC) and external quality assessment samples (EQA) according to departmental SOPs and Quality Assurance Policy.
3. Maintain specialist equipment, troubleshoot issues, and perform preventive maintenance.
4. Perform technical validation of patient results and conduct further investigations as needed.
5. Participate in departmental audits, incident reporting, and training activities.
6. Communicate effectively with clinicians, nurses, and other service users regarding patient results and service updates.
7. Undertake shift work, including evenings, weekends, and nights.
