engstaff-In is recruiting on behalf of a leading construction client for an experienced Commercial Director to join their senior leadership team on a contract basis. This is an exciting opportunity to take strategic ownership of the commercial function while playing a pivotal role in mentoring, developing, and strengthening the wider commercial team.
The Opportunity
This role offers a blend of strategic leadership and hands-on commercial management. You will be responsible for overseeing the full commercial lifecycle of construction projects, while actively supporting the development of junior and mid-level commercial professionals into senior, high-performing leaders.

Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership of the commercial function across multiple construction projects
Oversee cost management, commercial risk, contract administration, and financial performance
Lead and support claims management, variations, and dispute resolution
Act as a mentor and coach, developing junior and intermediate staff into senior commercial roles
Partner closely with project directors, operational teams, and senior stakeholders
Ensure robust commercial governance, compliance, and best practice
Support business growth through commercial strategy, bid support, and client engagement
About You
To be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:
Extensive experience in commercial management within the construction sector
A strong background in claims, variations, contractual negotiations, and dispute resolution
The ability to think strategically while remaining comfortable diving into detailed project financials and legal terms
A strong leadership presence with exceptional communication and influencing skills, capable of engaging senior professionals
Confidence, self-motivation, and adaptability, with a willingness to challenge the status quo and introduce innovative approaches
Proven track record of mentoring and developing teams into senior level roles
