Job Purpose
The Senior Li-ion Engineer role is within the Engineering department at Culham. They will work in a team of engineers and technicians that carry out Li-ion cell evaluation, batch acceptance testing, and preparation of Li-ion cells for space projects.
The Senior Li-ion Engineer will be responsible for a small team of engineers who work with colleagues from other disciplines to produce documentation and hardware for internal testing programmes, and supply data, e.g. for battery sizing and hazard analysis, to customer projects.
The role acts as an expert in the area of Li-ion cell performance both for internal projects and external customers/space agencies.
The candidate will have a STEM background, and experience working with Li-ion batteries.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Accountable for the technical work within internal cell engineering projects through:
o Identification and assessment of Li-ion cell technologies against performance requirements
o Definition, specification and delivery of cell testing programs to meet space industry standards, including:
2. Test plans and procedures
3. Test data review
4. Reporting to business and customers/agencies
5. Verification and sign-off of cell batches as flight suitable through acceptance testing, including comparison of batch performance against other batch data
6. Technical input and review of non-conformances
o Supporting cell ordering to meet future demand
o Ensuring preparation of cells for production, including:
7. Electrical screening data analysis and reporting
8. Inspection data analysis
9. Support the cell availability databases for project use
10. Technical input and review of non-conformances
o Review of documentation written by more junior engineers
11. Responsible for supplying data for product design:
o Definition of cell operating envelopes (thermal, mechanical, electrical)
o To enable and enhance in-house sizing, e.g. life time degradation
o Safety data to enable the completion of hazard analyses
12. Disseminating Li-ion cell information to external customers/space agencies through meetings and/or conferences
13. Providing training in Li-ion cell performance
14. Responsible for technical inputs to improvement projects within the team
15. Managing direct reports, including:
o Timesheets/absence monitoring/annual leave etc
o Setting of goals/objectives and performing appraisals
o Training and career development plans
o Allocation of tasks
16. Planning/Delivery
o Supports cell engineering hours in projects/bids
o Supports Cell Engineering Team Leader in work package definition
Qualifications
17. A degree in STEM subject.
Experience
Required
18. Test and data analysis of Li-ion cells in at least one of the following areas: Performance Life testing Safety testing
19. Presenting technical information
20. Reviewing and constructively criticising analytical results, technical reports and documents
21. High level of IT skills for data analysis, modelling, results presentation and reporting
Desirable
22. Experience of sizing batteries to customer requirements
23. Mentoring / training more junior engineers
