The Opportunity
An established and fast-paced operational business is looking to recruit a hands-on Yard Manager to oversee multiple busy yard locations across Greater Manchester.
This is a key operational role focused on maintaining safe, compliant, and efficient yard operations while leading teams and driving high standards across all activities. The successful candidate will take ownership of day-to-day yard performance, Health & Safety compliance, housekeeping standards, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
1. Oversee day-to-day operations across multiple yard locations.
2. Ensure safe loading, unloading, and vehicle movements throughout the yards.
3. Enforce Health & Safety procedures, PPE compliance, and safe working practices.
4. Monitor pedestrian and vehicle segregation to minimise risks.
5. Ensure lifting operations are planned and completed safely in line with regulations.
6. Carry out regular safety inspections, audits, and compliance checks.
7. Promote proactive hazard and near-miss reporting across the team.
8. Ensure all incidents and unsafe conditions are reported and addressed promptly.
9. Verify all equipment, including FLTs and sideloaders, is safe, inspected, and fit for use.
10. Ensure pre-use equipment checks are completed accurately and consistently.
11. Remove faulty equipment from service and coordinate repairs when required.
12. Maintain high housekeeping standards across all yard areas.
13. Oversee yard teams across multiple shifts to ensure standards are maintained consistently.
14. Monitor stock movements, yard organisation, and operational activity.
15. Maintain operational records, checklists, and Excel-based tracking systems.
16. Identify operational inefficiencies and implement practical improvements.
17. Communicate effectively with internal departments including Transport and Warehouse operations.
18. Lead, motivate, and hold teams accountable for performance and compliance standards.
About You
19. Previous experience within a Yard Manager, Yard Supervisor, Depot, Logistics, or Transport environment.
20. Strong understanding of yard operations and operational safety standards.
21. Excellent Health & Safety awareness and compliance knowledge.
22. Experience managing teams within fast-paced operational environments.
23. Confident challenging poor standards and unsafe behaviours.
24. Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
25. Comfortable using Excel and operational tracking systems.
26. Proactive, hands-on, and solutions-focused approach.
27. Strong communication skills with the ability to work across multiple departments.
