Job Description
Our client is seeking an HSE Advisor for their two state-of-the-art research facilities in Cambridge, MA.
The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing and managing the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) aspects for oil and gas related research laboratories in North America. This position will develop, implement, and monitor a centralized HSE function that includes processes and training programs compliant with corporate guidelines, federal, state, local regulations, and international best practices.
The successful candidate will provide leadership, technical, and regulatory expertise in environment, safety, health, occupational medical services, and emergency services. They will also direct an effective research center environmental process capable of zero notices of violation for regulatory noncompliance and zero citations for safety and health regulatory compliance. Additionally, this person will lead an effective safety and health process aimed at zero occupational injuries and illnesses.
Duties & Responsibilities
1. Plans, supports, and coordinates various safety projects & programs, including hazardous materials management, workplace safety committees, safety training development, emergency drills, and safety inspections.
2. Measures airborne contaminants using sampling instruments and collects samples of hazardous chemicals, physical, and biological agents for analysis.
3. Identifies loss potential conditions/practices and provides guidance on methods to eliminate or reduce risks.
4. Ensures compliance with local and federal occupational health and safety regulations and educates employees on hazards.
5. Conducts personnel sampling, consults on workplace hazards, applies scientific principles, and develops technical reports and training.
6. Creates safety programs to ensure a safe, healthful, and compliant workplace.
7. Uses scientific methods to monitor toxic chemicals, noise, radiation, asbestos, lasers, indoor air pollution, stress, and other hazards.
8. Performs hazard analysis and develops sampling and safety plans.
9. Inspects work operations and engineering controls for potential hazards.
10. Evaluates and recommends improvements for control systems and workplace conditions.
11. Investigates ventilation, lighting, and other environmental conditions affecting health and efficiency.
12. Develops and delivers training on occupational health, safety, and environmental programs.
13. Evaluates investigation findings and proposes corrective measures.
14. Collaborates with management and external agencies on health issues and solutions.
15. Responds to emergencies, investigates accidents, and develops improvement procedures.
16. Guides change management processes related to laboratory safety and hazard operability studies.
Education and Experience
* B.S. in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, Environmental Safety, Industrial Hygiene) or related field with relevant HSE experience and certifications.
* Minimum of 7 years’ HSE experience, preferably in petrochemical or oil/gas industries.
* Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written.
* Strong work ethic, adherence to policies, and professional etiquette.
Other Requirements
* Extensive knowledge of industrial hygiene and loss prevention in laboratory environments dealing with hazards like high pressure, high temperature systems, hydrocarbons, chemicals, X-ray, CT Scanning, and Nano materials.
* Certification as a radiation safety officer or ability to obtain it.
* Proven ability to develop and manage safety programs meeting OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, NEC standards.
* Knowledge of safety management systems, asset integrity, laboratory controls, risk assessment, chemical hygiene, emergency preparedness, and incident reporting.
* Preferred certifications include CIH, CSP, and CHMM within a research environment.
* Thorough knowledge of OSHA, EPA codes, standards, and specifications.
