Senior Staff Nurse
1. To provide high quality, evidence-based nursing care to Residents admitted to the Home.
2. To deliver high quality, evidence-based and Resident focused clinical care.
3. To work effectively as part of the immediate team and wider multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
4. To uphold a duty of care and clinical governance.
5. To maintain own and others’ knowledge of clinical excellence.
6. To maintain knowledge and competencies in tracheostomy and ventilator care and management, and to be able to clinically manage red flag and other concerns, and to know when to appropriately escalate care to external healthcare professionals.
7. To develop and maintain a professional ‘link’-nurse function, for example, infection control, tissue viability, PEG Management, Continence, as agreed with the Sister /Charge Nurse and based on the needs of the service.
Delivering high quality, evidence-based and patient focused clinical care through:
8. Delivering a high standard of evidence-based care to Residents.
9. Ensuring good standards of care for the Resident are maintained at all times.
10. Adhering to NMC Code of Professional conduct at all times.
11. Involving and supporting Residents, relatives, carers and friends in the care process.
12. Promoting well-being and involving Residents and relatives in health education.
13. Ensuring clear and accurate written and verbal information is given at all times.
14. Ensuring contemporaneous record keeping at all times.
15. Seeking advice from more senior/experienced members of staff where appropriate.
Working effectively as part of the immediate team and wider multi-disciplinary team (MDT) through:
16. Liaising effectively with all members of the MDT to ensure Resident’s needs are met.
17. Exercising leadership and taking the initiative where appropriate.
18. Providing support and advice to staff (especially junior staff) on clinical and administrative issues.
19. Keeping the Sister/ Charge Nurse informed of significant changes and/or anticipated problems.
Upholding a duty of care and clinical governance through:
20. Observing a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of yourself, work colleagues, visitors and Residents within the Home.
21. Ensuring the rules, policies, procedures and standards of the Home together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations are adhered to at all times.
22. Maintaining Resident confidentiality, dignity and privacy at all times.
23. Adhering to the Home’s policy on valuing equality and diversity and showing due regard for each Resident’s cultural and religious beliefs, gender, ethnicity, age and sexuality.
24. Strictly adhering to the Home’s Infection Control Protocols, policies and procedures.
Maintaining own and others’ knowledge of clinical excellence through:
25. Taking responsibility for your own personal development and keeping up to date with nursing knowledge.
26. Being aware of current research and the implications for the speciality.
27. Acting as a role model at all times and for all staff.
28. Acting as practice supervisor and/or preceptor/mentor for junior and newly-qualified staff.
29. Working with appropriate members of the teaching staff to ensure effective staff development (own and others).
30. Participating in the Home’s initiatives to develop nursing practice and support change.
General
31. To maintain strict confidentiality of staff and Residents records, in line with The Home’s Information Governance Policy: any unauthorised breach of confidentiality will result in disciplinary action.
32. To ensure that acceptable standards of data protection are maintained, in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
33. To observe the rules, policies and procedures in place at the Home.
34. To carry out duties as an employee and service-provider with due regard to the Home’s Equal Opportunities Policy.
35. To participate in team meetings as required.
36. Under the Health & Safety at Work Act, the post holder has a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being of oneself, work colleagues, visitors and Residents within the Home in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.
37. To undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade, which may be required from time to time.
