Overview

Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse for Private Patient Outpatient and Supportive Infusion Unit at The Royal Marsden in Chelsea. This is a full-time or part-time, permanent position (37.5 or 22.5 hours per week). The role does not include night shifts or weekends.

You will be a 1st level registered nurse with demonstrable oncology experience and experience in the administration of IV medications and chemotherapy. Intravenous cannulation and venepuncture are desirable; full training will be provided.

Main duties

1. Coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, evidence-led care to patients.
2. Exercise clinical judgment and decision-making about patient needs in terms of long-term goals or plans.
3. Participate in the day-to-day organization and running of clinical trials, including recruitment, education and monitoring of patients, and liaison with trial sponsors as required.
4. Assume personal accountability for nursing care delivered to patients in accordance with the NMC code of conduct. Promote a safe clinical environment and participate in infection control and care quality initiatives. Be aware of hospital policies and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure they are observed.
5. Help foster a supportive working environment and maintain staff morale.

The Senior Staff Nurse is responsible for assisting the Ward Sister / Charge Nurse in managing the clinical environment and shifts, and for the management and development of a team under supervision.

Job responsibilities

To complete the first level assessment of patients with cancer and their families to understand their physiological, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs and develop a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to ensure these needs are met. This includes:

* Counterchecking patients’ vital signs, blood results, body surface area, chemotherapy prescription and consent before administration of treatment.
* Educating patients on their treatment, indications and side effects.
* Ensuring necessary medications and follow-up appointments are obtained.

To plan, document, deliver and evaluate care plans from admission through discharge/transfer, discussing with the patient, family and multidisciplinary teams, and alerting the Sister/Charge Nurse of any changes. Set goals for identified nursing issues and teach others to do the same. As a specialist cancer nurse, assess educational and informational needs of the patient and family, producing and using appropriate materials to ensure understanding of nursing care and outcomes.


Person Specification

Education/Qualifications (Essential)

* NMC Registration
* Evidence of ongoing professional development
* SACT Competent
* RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment

Desirable

* Oncology or specialty qualification
* Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
* Recognised teaching qualification
* Leadership Training

Experience (Essential)

* Experience in managing the deteriorating patient
* Experience in chemotherapy administration
* Experience in intravenous drug administration
* CVAD access, cannulation and venepuncture
* Post-registration oncology or specialty nursing experience

Desirable

* Experience in Clinical Management
* Teaching experience
* Knowledge of clinical trials management

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge (Essential)

* Interpersonal skills to liaise with multidisciplinary teams
* Teamwork and collaboration
* Self-motivation and ability to work with minimal supervision
* Ability to work under pressure, make decisions, organize and prioritise
