Consultant in Respiratory Medicine
The Respiratory service runs on both the QMC and City campuses; cross site working is a requirement of the post. Most of our inpatient beds are currently on the City campus. We have a dedicated respiratory assessment unit (RAU) as well as five other inpatient wards, taking direct admissions via 999 ambulance service and transfers from the Emergency Department based at Queen’s Medical Centre campus. RAU has 20 beds, including 4 side rooms, and is led by a strong team of nurses, including Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) and a team of junior doctors. On the QMC campus we have the 12‑beded Advanced Respiratory Care Unit (ARCU). The Respiratory team also provides in‑reach cover to the Emergency Department and the acute medical admissions area based on the QMC campus.
Applicants must have GMC registration and be eligible to be included on the Specialist Register. Sub‑specialty interests could also be accommodated.
Main duties of the job
* Provide adult and paediatric respiratory clinical care across both campuses.
* Lead and manage the RAU, ARCU and inpatient wards.
* Deliver rapid response and in‑reach cover for the Emergency Department.
* Support sub‑specialty services including Severe Asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, ILD, lung cancer and infections such as TB.
* Engage in research, education and clinical audit to further service development.
* Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and develop service improvement initiatives.
Professional registration and qualifications
* Full GMC registration; expected to be included on the Specialist Register or CCT within 6 months of interview date.
* MBBS, MBChB or equivalent, with higher professional degree (MD, PhD) preferred.
Clinical skills and experience
* Evidenced technical skills in respiratory medicine as described above.
* Effective communication with patients, families and health professionals.
Management and personal skills
* Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery.
* Teamworking and flexible working in a changing health service.
* Able to teach and support junior staff, participate in clinical audit.
