The Role

The Economics Subject Group within Newcastle University Business School has 33 full-time research and teaching staff. We are a collegiate and generalist Group with expertise in all areas of economics. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality and attract high qualified students to our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and are looking for an outstanding Lecturer in Economics to join our Group.

The Economics Subject Group has a vibrant Research Community that promotes research around all areas of economics and, especially, in the following sub-themes:

1. Applied Time Series Econometrics
2. Behavioural and Experimental Economics
3. Economics of Safety, Health, Environment and Risk
4. Finance, Financial Economics and Financial Econometrics
5. Labour, Health, Education and Development Economics
6. Macroeconomics, Policies and Institutions in Open Economic Systems
7. Spatial, Urban, Regional, International and Industrial Economics

Our members have active funded projects in a range of areas including the Creative Industries and their Internationalisation, Education, Development, Energy, Environmental, and Rural Economics. We have a long tradition in informing public sector policy formation and hosts a state-of-the-art Behavioural Research Laboratory. We have expanded significantly in recent years and now invite applications from strong candidates, committed to collegiality, for a full time, open-field lectureship.

You will hold, or be close to obtaining, a relevant PhD and will be able to demonstrate a capacity to publish in journals of international standing. You will also have: (i) A clear and viable strategy for sustained future research that has the potential to result in world-leading publications; and (ii) the ability to teach economics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will contribute to the research profile of the Economics Subject Group in Newcastle University Business School by publishing in internationally recognised journals, demonstrating research impact, and securing external research funding. Additionally, you will develop and deliver programmes at Newcastle University Business School, ensuring an outstanding teaching experience for our students.

Key Accountabilities

Teaching & Learning

8. To provide high quality teaching and learning and student support
9. Mentor and support students throughout their studies in the role of personal tutor
10. Set and mark assessment of modules in accordance with University standards and utilise on-line and digitised curricula and education frameworks
11. Contribute to curriculum development
12. Ensure all our students benefit from studying in a research intensive, research excellent academic environment
13. Provide education for life, that engages, challenges and supports our students to discover and fulfil their potential both while they are studying with us and once they have graduated

Research

14. Conduct research that demonstrates international standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour in the subject area of Economics
15. Contribute to the research profile of the Business School by publishing high quality outputs
16. Pursue external funding
17. Demonstrate impact by developing research-based solutions to real-world problems and engage with external stakeholders to develop the impact of your work
18. Supervise PGR (postgraduate research) students in a research-led university

Other

19. Contribute to the Business School Vision, Mission and Strategy
20. Operate as an active citizen in the Business School community
21. To have an awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion and ethics, responsibility and sustainability
22. To support the Business School’s global activities and development
23. Undertake a range of administrative tasks to support your area of teaching, and/or research, and/or engagement for example, recruitment or research team leadership
24. Take responsibility for a defined management or administrative role such as Module Leader, Year Tutor, Degree Programme Director, Research Director, Outreach Co-ordinator
25. Contribute to the Business School’s international programme and professional body accreditations
26. Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Lecturer Grade F

27. Evidence or the potential to provide an outstanding educational experience, rooted in strong disciplinary knowledge that engages, challenges, and inspires our students
28. Ability to deliver research-led teaching, making effective use of technology to enhance learning
29. Evidence or potential for internationalising the curricula
30. Ability to develop and secure research funding
31. Experience of or capability to publish international and world-leading research
32. Ability to engage with external stakeholders, generating real-world impact from research
33. Evidence of developing an international research profile
34. Evidence of ability to contribute to the research of the Economics Subject Group
35. Ability to supervise PGR students
36. Ability to supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects
37. Commitment to interdisciplinary working
38. Excellent written and oral communication skills
39. Excellent organisational, time management and presentation skills
40. Demonstration of successful team working
41. Personal resilience in a context of change and fast paced environment
42. Ability to contribute to the Business School Vision and Strategy
43. Awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion, and to ethics, responsibility and sustainability
44. Experience of working in, or with, business, the third sector and/or policy (Desirable)

Lecturer Grade G

In addition to providing evidence of your previous experience of the criteria above, to be considered for a Grade G Lectureship you must also meet the follow criteria:

45. A sustained international/established research and innovation profile and proven track record in international and world-leading publications
46. Evidence of developing and securing grant capture
47. A track record of engaging with external stakeholders, generating real-world impact from research
48. Evidence of effective use of disciplinary and proactive research and a developed international research profile
49. Evidence of your contributions to the Economics subject area
50. Experience of attracting and supervising PGR students
51. Supervision of undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects
52. Substantial experience of designing and delivering high quality teaching and learning material, resources and activities for students
53. Ability to undertake a management and leadership role
54. Evidence of active academic citizenship

Qualifications

Lecturer Grade F

55. A good Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject
56. PhD (or equivalent) at or near completion (strictly within three months of submission at time of application) in a relevant subject
57. A relevant Professional Body Membership as appropriate to the subject area (Desirable)
58. HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience) (Desirable)

Lecturer Grade G

In addition to meeting the criteria for the Lecturer Grade F candidates must also meet the following criteria:

59. Completed PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant subject
