Overview
Quality Engineer with strong customer and supplier management skills sought in the Portsmouth area. CMS2 designs and manufactures atmospheric control systems for the defence industry, enabling high availability atmosphere management systems to generate breathable air for submariners.
CMS2 is part of the Science Group, a science and technology business providing consultancy and systems to an international client base.
Responsibilities
* Work within the bespoke engineering solutions side of the business to advise and implement customer quality requirements, particularly for life-support systems including critical workspace, oxygen and carbon capture-based solutions, water purification, rugged electronics for harsh environments, and precision engineering of high-integrity equipment.
* Collaborate with manufacturing and supply chain to ensure customer quality flow-downs are implemented, monitored, and controlled.
* Ensure product and process conformance; drive non-conformance investigations and root cause analysis activities.
* Develop and maintain the Quality Management System; manage Manufacturing Inspection & Test Plans and Life-Time Quality Records.
* Develop Quality Plans for new projects; manage concessions; communicate with customers and suppliers regarding quality issues.
* Conduct supplier quality control audits to ensure supplies comply with company, manufacturing and production standards.
* Plan and carry out internal audits against ISO 9001 and internal processes; report audit findings, agree corrective actions, and verify closure.
* Represent the quality function during design reviews, product changes, and new product introductions.
* Communicate with suppliers to address concerns and foster continual improvement in working relationships; serve as a liaison between the company’s Quality and supply chain teams and suppliers to identify quality issues and provide solutions.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
* Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Quality Engineer in a manufacturing environment or similar role.
* Comprehensive knowledge of ISO 9001; awareness of ISO 14001 and 45001.
* Strong supplier and customer management skills; knowledge of quality management tools and methodologies (e.g., APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, 8D, SPC, Control Plans, six sigma, Kaizen, Configuration Management, Risk Management).
* Knowledge of problem analysis methodologies (8D, Ishikawa, 5-Why, DoE, DMAIC) and decision-making skills.
* Ability to provide technical advice to suppliers to reduce defect rates; proficiency in interpreting mechanical drawings, GD&T, and measuring tools.
* Document control and strong organisational skills; strong computer skills (Microsoft Office).
* Experience working within a military/defence environment; strong interpersonal and communication skills; attention to detail; analytical and problem-solving abilities; ability to work in a team and travel as required.
Desirable
* Knowledge of aerospace special processes (e.g., NDT, chemical processing, welding, heat treatment, coating applications) and mill cert information.
* Knowledge of AS9100 Revision D; familiarity with defence regulatory requirements and standards (DEFSTAN, DEFCON).
* Lead Auditor trained; UKAS Certifed (Internal/External).
Security and Eligibility
If you are interested in applying, you must meet the requirements to pass a BPSS check and undergo a security clearance (SC) check. You must have the right to live and work in the UK. Gaining SC clearance normally requires at least 5 years’ UK residency.
