The solicitors of the in-house legal team act on behalf of MDU members in a variety of legal processes, including clinical negligence claims, General Medical Council proceedings, inquests, criminal investigations and prosecutions. They also provide legal advice to members and MDU colleagues on a range of important and often complex medico-legal issues.
A rare opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, high calibre criminal solicitor to join our award-winning legal department to assist doctors and dentists who are the subject of criminal investigations. We are looking for a solicitor with approximately 0–6 years’ PQE and experience in criminal investigations (including police station attendance) and prosecutions. You will be joining a busy department and will need to work effectively under pressure with excellent time management and communication skills, meticulous attention to detail and exceptional judgement.

Key Activities & Accountabilities
* Advise and represent MDU members in a wide range of medico-legal matters, including:
o Criminal investigations and criminal proceedings.
o Proceedings before the General Medical Council (GMC), including fitness to practise investigations and hearings.
o Other tribunal proceedings and representation at inquests before HM Coroner.
* Provide strategic, practical, and risk-based legal advice tailored to members’ professional and regulatory needs.
* Ensure members are fully supported throughout proceedings, maintaining high standards of client care and professional conduct.
Case Management & Advocacy
* Communicate directly and professionally with:
o Courts and court staff.
o The General Medical Council.
o HM Coroner and Coroner’s officers.
o Other tribunals and relevant bodies.
* Go on the court record as solicitor and prepare, file, and serve court documentation in accordance with procedural rules.
* Meet with members to take detailed instructions and prepare witness statements.
* Instruct and liaise with independent experts and Counsel where appropriate.
* Provide representation and advocacy at hearings, inquests, and tribunal proceedings.
* Attend and assist members at Police interviews, ensuring their rights and professional interests are protected.
* Act at all times in the best interests of both members and the MDU, in accordance with internal protocols and professional obligations.
Advisory Support & Telephone Rota
* Provide general legal advice to members and MDUSL colleagues on a broad range of medico-legal issues.
* Participate in the Medical Advisory Telephone Rota, delivering timely, practical advice to members seeking urgent support.
Departmental Contribution & Professional Profile
As delegated by the Head of Legal Services:
* Support the effective administration of the In-House Legal Department, contributing to operational efficiency and best practice.
* Research and advise on legal developments, procedural changes, and emerging medico-legal trends.
* Draft articles and deliver lectures or training sessions on medico-legal topics to enhance the professional profile and reputation of the MDU.
