Job overview

We are looking to recruit a Senior Medical Engineering Technician within our busy Medical electronics department to help us develop and extend the range of services we currently provide.

With your Electronic engineering & manufacturers specialised courses or equivalent work experience, you will ideally have some prior experience of working in a hospital medical engineering, maintenance environment.

The successful candidates will be required to work across our main sites i.e. Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Hospitals and at other specialist sites such the Boston House and the Thomas Linacre Centre in Wigan.

This is a full time post working 37.5 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

Your duties will include working with and supporting the Team Leader in providing a cost-efficient repair and maintenance service on medical equipment within the Trust.

The post holder will be responsible for all remedial repairs, Planned Preventative Maintenance, and calibration of a wide range of medical devices. This will include Anesthesia Machines, Ultrasounds, ventilators, patient monitors, etc… In addition, the acceptance testing and configuration of newly delivered medical devices.

The position will be part of the department's monthly rotating rota, wherein he or she will participate in daily rounds to attend to reported malfunctions and troubleshoot various types of medical equipment, ranging from complex to basic models.

The post holder will possess extensive medical equipment training and electronic engineering background, capable of managing their own workload and planning their work independently.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be a person with a broad range of training and experience on complex, multi-faceted medical equipment and have a background in electronic/electrical engineering that is able to plan and organise their own work using their own initiative and experience to manage his/her own work. The successful applicant will demonstrate an understanding of and have the ability to develop further the technical aspects of the post. The successful applicant will need to be committed to flexibility and pursue continuing development of their technical knowledge and develop new skills whilst undertaking their duties as part of a team, these will including liaising with colleagues and other staff members and provide on occasion training and instruction to medical and nursing staff and other colleagues when appropriate, the post holder will work towards the highest possible standards of patient care.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Completed an approved training programme to a minimum of HND in Electronic engineering & manufacturers specialised courses or significant equivalent work experience
2. Evidence of continuous professional and personal development (CPD)

Desirable criteria

3. IOSH (Institute of Safety and Heath) Certificate.
4. ECDL, European Computer Driving Licence
5. Be a member of a professional association to Incorporated level
6. The Register of Clinical Technologists (the RCT))

Experience

Essential criteria

7. Evidence of extensive equipment maintenance experience
8. Specialist equipment training on complex multi-parameter medical equipment
9. Evidence of experience gained working in a relevant health care environment
10. Will ideally have some prior experience of working in a hospital medical engineering, maintenance environment

Desirable criteria

11. Evidence of experience of maintaining a wide range of medical devices

Skills

Essential criteria

12. Ability to work with other professions
13. Must be able to work independently using own initiative
14. Good communicator
15. Versatile and receptive to training initiatives and change
16. Have good dexterity with an eye for detail

17. Knowledge and understanding of relevant medial equipment maintenance policies
18. Be computer literate in the use of Microsoft operating systems and applications and knowledge of databases

19. Fully conversant with electrical safety testing techniques
20. Working knowledge of physiological measurement techniques and terminology
21. Knowledge of good equipment management practice

Desirable criteria

22. Interested in pursuing technical developments relevant to medical devices

Essential criteria

23. Ability to travel independently between all Trust sites
24. Concentrated attention for “micro” work
25. Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation.
