Public Safety Dispatcher (Full-Time and Part-Time)
The South Kingstown Police Department is seeking candidates for the role of Public Safety Dispatcher for full-time and part-time opportunities. The department serves a diverse 63-square-mile community, home to over 30,000 residents. It is supported by strong local public safety partners, including a municipally run paramedic-level Emergency Medical Services Department and two volunteer fire departments.
Responsibilities of this position include monitoring telephone and radio communications in the dispatch center; answering all incoming calls (including 911), gathering information, and transmitting or relaying it to appropriate responders; receiving complaints, requests, emergency calls, or other information from patrols or the general public and transmitting them to the responsible parties for action; monitoring nine (9) radio bands, including SKPD, County, Intercity, SK Department of Public Works, CDSTARS, URI Police Department, Narragansett Police Department, SK Fire Department, and Intercity Fire Department; monitoring Deaf/TTY phone; operating and monitoring multiple computer programs; processing background check requests for child care, elder care, firearm applications, and other security clearances; processing vehicle identification number checks for the public; releasing towed vehicles to the proper owner according to officer’s instructions and Rhode Island law; maintaining a log regarding radio and telephone communications; and other duties as assigned and consistent with this position.
This position is considered essential, is subject to being held or called back, and must be available for all shifts, including during storms, severe weather, and other emergency events. This position plays a critical role in the safety and security of the Town’s residents, businesses, and public safety personnel.
The ideal candidate must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent and one (1) year of experience in general office practices such as word processing, data entry, typing, and filing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates must demonstrate dependability, excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong computer proficiency, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Candidates must also demonstrate the ability to remain calm in stressful and emergency situations, multi-task effectively, function well under pressure, and maintain a high degree of maturity, discretion, and attention to detail.
This union-affiliated position (Council 94) starts at $26.56 per hour, increasing to $27.24 per hour upon successful completion of a six-month probationary period. his position is associated with the Employee Retirement System of Rhode Island Pension Program, which earns up to 12 vacation days, 15 sick days and 3 personal days a year on top of 13 paid holidays as well as offers full medical, vision and dental coverage. This position is also eligible for incentive pay up to an additional $1.75 per hour depending on skills certifications attained in accordance with the C94 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Applicants must pass a thorough background check prior to hire.

Failure to appear for the exam will disqualify you from the process. The Chief of Police may waive the fee under a hardship waiver upon written request in advance of the exam date. Please note: As long as you have submitted an application, you will be on the roster for the exam. You will not receive a separate invitation.
