Summary

As a Babcock Defence Support Group Technical Apprentice on our Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship, you’ll work on a wide range of Military Land Equipment, tackling challenging and varied tasks in an exciting environment. Your work will play a crucial role in ensuring the armed forces have equipment they can depend on.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.


What you'll do at work

* No two days are the same as you provide vital services that assist critical military exercises and training. It's a chance to launch a career that makes a real difference to national security
* Apprentices will be trained to a Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician apprenticeship standard (Vehicle Mechanics) to achieve a fully accredited Level 3 qualification
* The academic aspects of the apprenticeship will be delivered off-site. The rest of the time, you'll be working from your selected home location, with opportunities to work from alternate sites for brief periods to broaden your overall experience

What you'll learn

Course contents

* Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
* The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
* Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
* Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
* The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
* Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
* Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
* Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
* Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
* Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
* To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.


Training schedule

Your apprenticeship will follow the Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician standard to qualify with an Advanced Apprenticeship.

During your apprenticeship, in both an academic setting and through practical experience in the workplace, you will:

* Develop practical skills and skills working with hand tooling
* Gain a full understanding of how machines work, including how to service, maintain, diagnose, and repair a wide range of military vehicles
* Understand technical information and diagrams
* Be able to write reports, describing the repairs and services you have carried out
* Understand and follow health and safety regulations

Additionally, you will be given the opportunity to gain extra professional competencies.


Requirements


Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

* English (grade 4(C) and above)
* Maths (grade 4(C) and above)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

Many of our apprenticeship programmes are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which programmes you are eligible for.
