Job overview

We are looking to recruit a Medical Secretary for the Haematology and Oncology department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

You should be able to work as part of a team as well as being able to use your initiative and prioritise workloads to achieve deadlines. You will need to have good communication skills; essential when liaising with consultants, doctors and nursing teams, patients and other secretarial staff within both the hospital and GP practices. You must also have competent audio typing skills to ensure clinic letters are composed in a timely manner.

There is a requirement that you will need to work all day on Fridays

Main duties of the job

To provide a comprehensive and quality medical secretarial service to a team of consultants and associated supporting clinical staff, supporting the efficiency of front-line services. To provide support to your team members and have an organised view of clinics to feedback to the team leader.

Co-ordinate referrals and new appointments and liaise sensitively with patients.

Provide first point of contact to the Consultants office, requiring emotional resilience for the sensitive nature of the department and organisational skills needed to co-ordinate visiting consultant workload.

Person specification

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential criteria

11. English Language GCSE grade C or above, or equivalent

Desirable criteria

12. Understands patient confidentiality.
13. RSA II typing or equivalent
14. Knowledge of medical terminology is highly desirable (AMSPAR).

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria

15. Experience of managing a discrete body of work to ensure timescales are met.
16. Experience of word processing and audio-typing
17. Ability to work with highly confidential data, and to maintain patient confidentiality

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria

18. Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
19. Excellent written and telephone communication skills, to enable liaison with staff at all levels

Desirable criteria

20. Knowledge of Data Protection Act, 1998 and other Trust Policies and Procedures
21. Knowledge of Trust Information Systems, e.g. CRS

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

Essential criteria

22. Ability to travel between Trust hospitals and other Trusts within the Thames Valley Cancer Network to attend Network and MDT meetings and training.
