Overview
We are looking for a talented and detail-driven Mechanical Design Engineer to join our dynamic Engineering Team at our SSIA site in Gloucester. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will play a vital role in designing and detailing Mechanical housings and enclosures for electronic systems used throughout the Defence and Cyber-security sectors, in line with detailed design specifications. You will work towards building a large offering of standard product lines as well as bespoke design solutions, support, complete and create full product drawing packs to the highest standards, assist with the build of prototype units, and see the product from conception through to full launch and ongoing lifecycle maintenance.
Responsibilities
* Design Mechanical solutions that comply with the detailed design specification with the objective of completing within tight time frames and budgetary restraints driven by a competitive marketplace.
* Produce 2D detail drawings through SolidWorks to a high standard for manufacturing and inspection, predominantly sheet metal and machined components, but not limited to.
* Provide design for cost solutions for product development that meet technical requirements and Company processes for manufacture.
* Produce assembly drawings and compile BoMs on the company’s ERP system.
* Create and maintain product drawing packs and product design documentation.
* Support Research and Innovation projects, prototype builds and developments.
* Develop strong relationships with other design team members, production engineering and the test team to ensure designs can be manufactured in a timely manner with a ‘right first time’ approach.
* Support generation of project time plans to ensure successful delivery of development programmes.
* Actively support and implement Drawing Office Procedures, maintain company Document Release and Engineering Change Request procedures.
* Ensure that all Environmental Health and Safety / Company Policies are adhered to at all times.
Education / Qualifications
* Preferred HNC in Mechanical Engineering or above
* Further education/courses associated with mechanical engineering and membership of a recognised Mechanical Institute an advantage
* 3-5 years’ experience in a similar role
Knowledge and Experience
* Experience in designing and drafting using 3D and 2D CAD tools, preferably SolidWorks.
* A strong understanding of manufacturing processes and their associated cost drivers.
* Clear understanding of fabrication, sheet metal, machined components, and manufacturing practices
* Knowledge and experience of using Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
* Must have good attention to detail, analytical and a problem solver, must be able to produce clear and concise design documentation with a “right first time” attitude
