Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon

We are seeking a colleague who will be able to complement the existing consultant workforce and to continue to strengthen the reputation of the department with respect to quality of care, education and training, research and quality improvement.

The post is based at Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen (GGH) which is the main acute site for the Health Board and also the local HB Trauma unit. Your on call duties, regular fracture clinics and trauma lists will be undertaken at this site. Your elective work will be undertaken at Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli (PPH), although there may also be a requirement to undertake some elective work regionally on a flexible basis.


Main duties of the job

We are looking for a fellowship trained knee surgeon able to provide all aspects of elective knee surgery, excluding revision knee surgery.

You will be expected to deliver general trauma provision including non-specialised paediatric orthopaedic trauma on a 1 in 12 rota, providing prospective cover.

In addition to your general trauma and elective orthopaedic practice, you will be expected to provide an acute knee service in conjunction with your knee specialist colleague(s) and engage in local, regional and national MDT meetings.

You will be expected to chair a virtual monthly HB wide governance meeting on a shared basis with other colleagues from across the HB and to attend this meeting unless on leave or undertaking on call commitments.

The department has a strong commitment to training for all grades of resident doctors, Allied Health professionals and medical and nursing students and you will be expected to actively contribute to this by acting as an educational and clinical supervisor.

You will be expected to fully contribute to all elements of clinical governance, including clinical audit, quality improvement and responding to requests for information relating to datix incidents, patient complaints, redress concerns and medicolegal claims.

You will also be expected to engage with regional and national working groups within the Wales Orthopaedic Network.

Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services;

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

Person Specification


Qualifications and Knowledge

* Full registration and a License to Practice with the General Medical Council.
* On the GMC Specialist Register (including via Portfolio Pathway (CESR)/European Community Rights) or will have CCT due within six months of interview date.
* Valid Certified Advanced Life Support.
* Where a sub-specialty interest is required sub-specialty training should be to a level appropriate for UK consultant sub-specialist practice - fellowship or equivalent level experience.
* Additional Higher qualification(s).


Clinical Experience

* Broad based experience within the specialty area.
* Able to demonstrate core competencies and clinical skills relevant to the post.
* Previous experience working in the UK or NHS.


Teaching

* Ability to critically assess learning requirements for self and others.
* Evidence of organising programmes and teaching all staff groups.
* Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff.
* Teaching qualification.


Research and Scholarship

* Demonstrates knowledge of current research and best practice in the specialty area.
* Evidence of keeping up to date with current research and best practice.
* Evidence of locating and using clinical guidelines appropriately.
* Evidence of communicating and interpreting research evidence in a meaningful way.
* Active participation in research.


Clinical Governance

* Understanding of the role of Clinical Governance.
* Participation in clinical audit (or quality improvement project) and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice.
* Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process.
* Knowledge of risk management.


Safeguarding

* Demonstrates knowledge of safeguarding requirements and takes appropriate responsibility.
* Evidence of applying appropriate equality and diversity legislation.


Other

* Welsh Speaker (Level 1)
