Fellow in Environmentally Sustainable Anaesthesia (ST3+ equivalent)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, engaged and committed Fellow in environmentally sustainable anaesthesia to work in a specific role within the peri-operative and critical care directorate at the Freeman Hospital. This National Fellowship is jointly organised between Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Trust, The Association of Anaesthetists and the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare and involves working with all three organisations.
The aim of the fellowship is to improve the evidence base underpinning environmentally sustainable anaesthesia, establish best practice, remove barriers to implementation and share findings with the wider anaesthetic and medical communities. All clinical work will be within Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals.
Post is available from 5th August 2026 for 12 months.
The post will include clinical duties in critical care and anaesthesia. The successful individual will be expected to take part in the on‑call rota at a level suitable to their clinical experience.
Main duties of the job
This post is suited to anaesthetic trainees with a special interest in sustainable healthcare. Applicants should have completed Foundation Training and Core/ACCS Anaesthetic training. This post provides a solid basis for applying for an ST or Consultant post.
Job responsibilities
The clinical component will be based between the anaesthetic department and the general critical care unit at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne. The candidate can expect to gain experience in the following surgical specialties: Hepatobiliary, Vascular, Renal, Urology, ENT, Maxo‑Facial, Orthopaedics and General Surgery.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* Primary Medical Qualification.
* Full GMC registration.
* Satisfactory completion of Foundation Training (or equivalent).
* Competent to work on suitable anaesthesia and critical care on‑call rotas.
* Primary FRCA.
* At least 2 years' experience of working within the NHS.
* ALS/ATLS.
* Full FRCA.
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
* Good history and examination skills.
* Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
* Able to order appropriate investigations.
* Image interpretation relevant to practice.
* Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
* Ability to manage common medical emergencies.
* Experience and interest in the specialty.
* Experience and interest in Sustainable Healthcare and environmental issues.
* Neat, legible writing of notes and charts.
* Ability to perform basic general procedures relevant to anaesthesia and critical care.
Maintaining Clinical Competence
* Written evidence of satisfactory training to date (e.g., workplace assessments).
* Proven management and administration ability.
Teaching
* Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students and Foundation Doctors.
* Contribution to departmental training sessions.
* Some knowledge of learning theories.
Clinical Governance, Audit and Research
* Experience of audit projects.
* Understanding of research principles.
* Presentation of completed audit projects at local or national meetings.
* Organised or contributed to an audit project that has resulted in change.
* Evidence of participation in research projects.
* Publication of research in peer‑reviewed journals and presentation at local and national meetings.
