Job Description
We are seeking a Crime Analyst to join the Economic Crime Unit (ECU), part of National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU), who are committed to supporting the Environment Agency's enforcement community. The EA tackle around 40,000 suspected and alleged environmental offences each year. We help to protect and improve the environment by regulating industry, ensuring compliance, and eliminating illegal activities including Organised Crime Groups. The ECU consists of Accredited Financial Investigators, Financial Intelligence Officers and a Senior Crime Analyst.

Environmental crime is a strategic priority, attracting high profile attention from the public, media, national and international stakeholders.

This role provides an exciting opportunity to support on financial investigations and the development of financial intelligence. This will help prioritise and drive forward interventions to disrupt and further prevent unlawful operators from integrating into the waste regimes.

You will help deliver our response by pro-actively developing and accessing intelligence from a range of sources. This will influence decision making and provide actionable analytical product for our customers.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team

You will work alongside the Senior Crime Analyst to assist in the development of financial intelligence. You will also be responsible for producing analytical products and assessments which will help to identify new subjects and emerging threats. This will enhance and drive proactive ways of working for both civil and criminal financial investigations in the ECU. The products you produce may also be used in evidence and you may be expected to attend court.

Experience/skills Required
You will be a team player who establishes and builds on positive working relationships with your colleagues and internal/external partners. There are a variety of skills and experience required for this role which are listed below: -

* Experience of handling sensitive information, recording and disseminating intelligence material.
* Be competent in the use of various IT applications relating to the role including intelligence systems.
* Able to produce high quality analytical products to clearly and accurately inform decision making.
* Be self-motivated and proactive.
* You will be able to identify intelligence gaps, interpret and share intelligence and information to assess risk, and direct resources effectively.
* You will ideally have knowledge of the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) and some experience of analysing financial data.
* It is essential that you have an intelligence background.
* You should ideally have undertaken a recognised analytical training course e.g. NIAT

Contact and additional information

Location is flexible, and we are happy to support a mixture of home and office working. However, as you will be working in a dispersed team national travel will sometimes be required. You will have a fixed office base which will be agreed with your Team Leader prior to appointment.

You will be required to undertake the National Crime Agency Financial Intelligence Officer accreditation training which will allow you to access relevant systems.

As the Crime Analyst for the ECU, you may need to present findings to other departments within the Environment Agency who are new to the work of the Economic Crime Unit.

Can you describe a time when you presented complex or technical information to an audience unfamiliar with the subject? What steps did you take to ensure your message was clear and well understood?
