Strategic Commercial Underwriter
1. Play a pivotal role helping NFU Mutual shape their underwriting strategy across diverse commercial segments - 3 roles are available which can be offered on either a permanent or 12 month fixed-term-contract basis.
2. Undertake a high-impact role combining portfolio insight, stakeholder influence and technical expertise within commercial underwriting
3. Hybrid working on offer – spend up to 80% of your time working from home, with 20% office attendance at any of our UK sites - Stratford-upon-Avon, Bristol, York, Glasgow or Belfast
About the role
This is a key underwriting role within our Commercial Segment team, focused on shaping and delivering underwriting strategy across defined commercial segments rather than individual insurance classes. Reporting to the Underwriting Segment Manager, you’ll play an influential role in ensuring sustainable, profitable growth through strong portfolio management, insight led decision making and expert underwriting judgement.
Working as part of a specialist team that manages commercial segments such as leisure and services, retail and wholesale, property owners, construction and motor-related sectors, you’ll take a holistic view of account performance. You’ll also get the chance to manage customer segments like SME (small to medium enterprises), Mid-Market and Large Corporate.
The team provides a stronger underwriting voice across the business, driving proactive ownership of segment outcomes and influencing future risk mix and strategy.
In this role, you’ll analyse performance against the mid-term plan, carry out deep dives into data and metrics, and build clear account stories that inform corrective actions and strategic direction. You’ll collaborate closely with colleagues across Underwriting, Pricing, Sales, Claims, and Product, as well as our regional teams, acting as a technical point of referral and contributing to wider strategic projects such as commercial growth and product development.

About you
With experience in commercial underwriting, you bring strong analytical capability alongside sound underwriting judgement and excellent project management skills. You’re comfortable working with data to understand performance trends, explain outcomes and influence decisions, and you enjoy collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders to deliver shared objectives.

4. Experience of commercial underwriting, with the ability to apply technical knowledge across different market segments
5. Strong data handling, analysis and reporting skills to support portfolio and performance management
6. The confidence to influence and collaborate with stakeholders across underwriting, pricing, sales and wider business areas
7. Well developed problem solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
8. A collaborative mindset, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively
9. Experience of portfolio or account management would be beneficial but is not essential.
10. Prior knowledge of customer segments like SME (small to medium enterprises), Mid Market and Large Corporate would also be highly desirable
