Specialist Biomedical Scientist (SBMS) – Microbiology

Location & Working Pattern
* Glasgow Royal Infirmary
* Across 7 days of the week
* Inclusive of evenings, weekends, on‑call and public holidays
Key Responsibilities
* Perform complex and specialist microbiological tests to support the diagnosis and management of infection.
* Interpret laboratory results and authorise findings using specialist knowledge and professional judgement.
* Provide expert technical advice to clinicians, GPs and other service users as required.
* Operate, troubleshoot and maintain highly complex laboratory analysers and equipment.
* Supervise, support and train trainee biomedical scientists and laboratory support staff.
* Ensure all work complies with quality standards, health and safety requirements and accreditation regulations.
* Contribute to service improvement, audit, research and the development of standard operating procedures.
Qualifications & Experience
* IBMS accredited BSc (Honours) degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent suitable for HCPC registration.
* Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Biomedical Scientist.
* Successful completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology or equivalent experience.
* Extensive practical experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory environment.
* In‑depth knowledge of specialist diagnostic techniques including automated microbiology systems.
* Commitment to continuing professional development and maintaining specialist competence.
* Ability to work independently, supervise others and prioritise workload in a 24‑hour service.
