We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our Pharmacy Department.

This is an exciting opportunity within the pharmacy medicines management service. You will provide safe, timely, appropriate and high quality pharmaceutical services and assist in returns and distribution of medicines in the hospital wards and clinics throughout the Denmark Hill site.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will work on designated wards and perform a range of pharmacy related duties as well as medicines returns in accordance with set procedures.

Assist in the transfer of medicines between wards and locate medicines that have been left behind when patients are transferred between wards, including patient’s own drugs.

The post holder will assist the dispensary team in the delivery of dispensing activities in the dispensary, carrying out duties in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

Full training will be provided in all areas along with working towards the NVQ Level 2 in the Principles and Practices of the Pharmacy Assistant qualification.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Work on designated wards and in the Pharmacy department to perform a range of pharmacy related duties in accordance with set procedures.
* Reduce wastage of medicines by assisting with medication transfer within the trust.
* Process the returns of excess stock or dispensed medication from the wards into the pharmacy stores or ward omnicell, checking remaining shelf life and confirming quantities.
* Comply with SOPs relating to efficient stock control in the issue, return and recycling or safe disposal (as appropriate) of drugs from wards, departments & clinics.
* Assist the dispensary team in the delivery of dispensing activities in the dispensary, carrying out duties in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
* Participate in a 7‑day operational model including working weekends and bank holidays.
* Refer non‑routine enquiries to a more senior member of staff as appropriate.
* Use pharmacy computer systems correctly and enter data accurately.
* Ensure the safe, effective and economical use of drugs for all patients in the Trust.
* Follow departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
* Dispense inpatient, outpatient and discharge medication accurately.
* Contribute to wider policies that have an impact within the pharmacy department and across the Trust.


Qualifications

* NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services, or able to undertake an apprenticeship in Pharmacy Services (with workplace support).
* GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English (minimum grade C).
* Knowledge of procedures for pharmacy services.
* Knowledge of pharmacy computer systems.


Experience

* Communicate with patients where there may be barriers to understanding.
* Communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats with staff and patients.
* Experience of dispensing medication.


Skills

* Highly developed physical skills in relation to accuracy.
