Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role for a Senior Mechanical Engineer based in our Colchester Office. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the mechanical design of building and infrastructure projects, from concept development and feasibility studies through detailed design, specification, and documentation. Day-to-day responsibilities include performing mechanical calculations, preparing and reviewing CAD models and drawings, coordinating with other engineering disciplines, and ensuring designs comply with relevant codes and standards. The role involves managing project scopes, schedules, and resources, supporting tender submissions, and providing technical guidance during construction and commissioning. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will also mentor junior engineers, contribute to R&D and innovation initiatives, and maintain strong communication with clients and project stakeholders.
Main Responsibilities
- Assisting Directors in the preparation of fee proposals.
- Project invoicing.
- Lead designer role, managing engineering input and drawing production on projects.
- Negotiating and developing the project scope (inc strategic approach, energy requirements, selections and standards) and agreeing these with clients if working in consultancy.
- Reviewing/commenting on tenders and cost plans.
- Developing projects from concept to completion ensuring LoD follows BSRIA BG6.
- Using specialist computer-aided design (CAD) software and other resources to design the systems required for the project.
- Having awareness of internal project cost, time spent and notifying Directors if there is a risk of significant overspend on the project.
- Designing and selecting project-specific equipment as required to meet energy/cost targets.
- Making decisions about expired systems equipment and the appropriate location of new equipment as part of condition surveys.
- Liaising closely with other professionals, including structural engineers, principal contractors, architects and surveyors.
- Attending a range of project-specific and technical meetings and covering both Mechanical and Electrical sides and reporting meeting-specific notes to the opposite discipline.
- Ensuring that the design and maintenance of building systems meet legislative and health and safety requirements as per CIBSE Guide M.
- Advising clients and architects on energy usage and conservation in a range of buildings and sites, aiming to minimise the environmental impact and reduce the carbon footprint.
Experience
To be considered for this Senior Level Engineering Role you would have the following skills;
- A Degree in Building Services Engineering (MEng/BEng/BSc) or significant practical experience in Building Services.
- Have greater than 5 years' experience in a Building Services Engineering Role.
- Proven ability in generating low energy and creative design solutions.
- Proven ability preparing specifications, project reports, site inspections and surveys and detail design development including calculation packages.
- Experience in detailed coordination with other disciplines.
- Experience and competency using MS Excel.
- Experience in Design Builder, AutoCAD, Revit, H2x, Office 365.
