Lead Design Technician - Secondary School (Design & Technology Department)
Location: Northampton
Start Date: September 2026
Contract: Full-Time | Permanent Preferred | Fixed-Term Considered
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
We are seeking an experienced Design Technician to lead the day-to-day management of workshops, resources, and technical support across the Design & Technology department. The role is based in a well-established Northampton secondary school, with a permanent appointment preferred (fixed-term arrangements considered for the right candidate).
Responsibilities
* Lead and coordinate technical support across the Design & Technology department
* Prepare, organise, and maintain materials, equipment, tools, and machinery for practical lessons
* Support teaching staff and students during practical activities and demonstrations
* Oversee the maintenance, servicing, and safe operation of workshop equipment
* Manage stock levels, budgets, ordering processes, and resource allocation
* Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, risk assessments, and COSHH requirements
* Conduct regular safety inspections and maintain accurate records
* Support GCSE and A-Level practical assessments, coursework projects, and departmental events
* Assist in developing workshop systems and procedures to ensure efficient departmental operations
* Provide guidance and support to other technicians where appropriate
The Ideal Candidate
* Previous experience working as a Design Technician, Senior Technician, or in a similar technical role
* Strong practical knowledge of workshop equipment, machinery, materials, and manufacturing processes
* Excellent understanding of health and safety procedures within a workshop environment
* Highly organised with strong problem-solving and communication skills
* Able to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively
* Experience within an educational setting is desirable but not essential
* Relevant technical qualifications or industry experience would be advantageous
