Overview
Here at the Royal United Hospitals, Bath we manage and collect a combined figure of around 1300 tonnes a year of clinical waste, offensive waste, general waste, recyclable waste and other waste streams. We recycle where we can and take the business of managing waste on site very seriously. We have a small in-house team who cover 365 days of the year, ensuring the site is clear of waste in collaboration with clinical and non-clinical colleagues. This is a physical and fast-paced job with daily variety and new challenges.
This role provides and maintains a positive environment for both patients and colleagues on site through a professional, efficient and timely waste collection service; ensuring the clearance of clinical, non-clinical, hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams on site; and collecting dirty linen and scrubs for timely return to our contracted launderer.
Good communication skills are essential as you will interact with many people across the site, either as part of a team or on your own. Waste streams are collected five times throughout the day and evening from all wards and departments within the hospital.
Responsibilities
* Collection of clinical, domestic, recycling and other special waste items from wards and departments in line with the Trusts Policy and Procedures.
* Segregation of all waste streams prior to collection by waste contractors.
* Weighing and logging of clinical waste bins and electrical appliances.
* Collection of soiled laundry from wards and departments for storage prior to collection by the laundry supplier.
* To collect and deliver furniture and other equipment as required from corridors, wards and departments as detailed in job request sheets.
Requirements / Qualifications
* Possess a valid driving licence with C1 category on your current licence (or be willing to obtain C1 within 1 year of employment, and/or have the opportunity to obtain C1 on top of your licence) which enables you to operate the 750 tonne van.
* Good organisational skills and the ability to work on your own initiative when required.
* Good communication skills to interact with colleagues across site.
Employment details
* Full-time role with varied shifts, covering leave and absence in the department. Shifts are varied and worked on a rota basis.
* The service covers 7 days a week, 6am – 7.30pm.
* This role involves being out and about most of the day, visiting different areas and meeting different people.
